The Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal is an annual award "for the most significant Swedish sports achievement of the year". It has been awarded by a jury led by the Swedish morning paper Svenska Dagbladet since 1925. According to its statutes the Medal may be awarded in November or December to either an individual sportsperson or a team. An individual can be awarded the Medal no more than twice, and to receive a second medal, that athlete must be "regarded a class of his own".

Excellence was a Swedish pop girl group from 2001 created through the TV programme Popstars on Kanal 5. The group scored a number one album on the Swedish Charts, as well as five top 10 singles, and entered Melodifestivalen 2002. They also collaborated with Markoolio on the official Swedish song for the 2002 Winter Olympics "Vi ska vinna!" Their last single was 'We can dance' which reached top 10 on the charts. The group split shortly after the single was released. Member Ana Johnsson later scored a worldwide solo hit with the song "We Are" from the Spider-Man 2soundtrack and has since then released her second album Little Angel.

Måns Petter Albert Sahlén Zelmerlöw is a Swedish pop singer and television presenter. He took part in Idol 2005, eventually finishing fifth, won the first season of Let's Dance, and scored a hit with his 2007 song "Cara Mia", which was his entry in that year's Melodifestivalen. Zelmerlöw was the host of Allsång på Skansen from 2011 to 2013. He participated in Melodifestivalen in 2007, 2009 and won in 2015. Zelmerlöw represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Heroes", winning the contest with 365 points. The song peaked at number 23 on the Swedish singles chart, becoming the fourteenth single by the band to chart in their home country and became a new entry at number ten on the Svensktoppen before peaking at number seven a week later.
