Women in DSO is an American non-profit organization, which focuses on highlighting the contributions of women across the dental industry and promoting women leaders across the Dental Service Organizations. [1] [2]

History

Women in DSO was created in 2019 by Dr. Aman Kaur with the intention to support the growth and empowerment of women leaders in DSOs and also to advance female leadership in dentistry. [3] [4]

In 2020, Women in DSO partnered with Henry Schein, Dykema DSO, DCA (Dental Care Alliance), Aspen Dental,Patterson Dental, Heartland Dental, Align, Darby Dental, SmileDirectClub, Dentsply Sirona and Overjet to further this mission and gained their support to build the supporting programs and networks. The Oral Health Foundation was formed in 1971 and is one of the world’s leading independent oral health charities. It is headquartered in the United Kingdom and aims to help the public improve their oral health and hygiene through a range of activities run under the name of the Oral Health Foundation. The current President of the Oral Health Foundation is Mhari Coxon, and the CEO is Dr Nigel Carter OBE.

Michele Aerden is a dentist and was president of the FDI World Dental Federation from 2005 to 2007. She was the first woman ever to be elected president of this non-profit organization and worked to promote oral health within the World Health Organization and worldwide.

There is a long history of women in dentistry. Women are depicted as assistant dentists in the middle ages. Prior to the 19th-century, dentistry was largely not yet a clearly defined and regulated profession with formal educational requirements. Individual female dentists are known from the 18th-century. When the profession was regulated in the 19th-century, it took a while before women achieved the formal education and permission to engage in dentistry.
