The Workbook Project (WBP) is an online community and network with an emphasis on film, design, video games, and transmedia storytelling. [1] It was founded by writer-director Lance Weiler in 2006. [2] It provides resources, advice, and documentation from the community with a focus on the process of funding, creating, distributing and sustaining creative projects. [3] Its goal is to help extend the story of any project, while giving value to the project and its audience. Within the WBP are five individual branches that all feed back into the larger Workbook Project community. Those branches include: WBPLabs, New Breed, [4] Culture Hacker, RADAR, [5] DIY DAYS. [6]
WBP host a yearly Discovery and Distribution Award which is designed to fund and provide distribution for a film, musician or designers. [7]
The most recent project from WBP, Pandemic 1.0, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2011, was an example of Weiler bringing in the community of WBP to collaborate on and participate with the project. [8]

Lance Weiler is an American filmmaker and writer from Pennsylvania. He first was known for The Last Broadcast (1997), a found footage horror film which he co-wrote, co-produced, co-directed, and co-starred in with Stefan Avalos. The Last Broadcast made cinematic history on October 23, 1998 as the first all-digital release of motion picture to be stored and forwarded via geosynchronous satellite. Initially working as an assistant cameraman and camera operator on large commercial shoots, in Pennsylvania and later New York City, Weiler is known for increasing work in experimental combinations of film, AI, gaming, and related media.

Visual Communications –– is a community-based non-profit media arts organization based in Los Angeles. It was founded in 1970 by independent filmmakers Robert Nakamura, Alan Ohashi, Eddie Wong, and Duane Kubo, who were students of EthnoCommunications, an alternative film school at University of California, Los Angeles. The mission of VC is to "promote intercultural understanding through the creation, presentation, preservation and support of media works by and about Asian Pacific Americans." Visual Communications created learning kits, photographed community events, recorded oral histories, and collected historical images of Asian American life. Additionally, it created films, video productions, community media productions, screening activities, and photographic exhibits and publications.
