The World Chess Network (WCN) was a commercial Internet chess server devoted to the play and discussion of chess that launched in 1997 and closed ten years later in 2007 when it was bought by Internet Chess Club and merged with Chess Live to form World Chess Live. As a typical chess server, the network provided basic services such as the conduction of live chess games over the Internet between two human players. Chess tournaments were occasionally conducted by the service, including a select few matches between known chess Grandmasters where spectators could watch the game in real-time. During its heyday, the network was frequented by professional chess players including notable Grandmasters like Elena Donaldson, Susan Polgar, Larry Christiansen and Larry Evans.
The World Chess Network provided a number of services to its subscribers. Besides the facilitation of online chess games, it also provided members with a method of conducting online chess tournaments. The network used the Elo rating system for rating its players. The World Chess Network also conducted professional grandmaster tournaments, [1] allowing spectators to watch these matches live, with professional commentaries. It also advertised itself as a venue for real-world chess players seeking to improve their playing skills. The network facilitated private chess lessons from professional players, usually via arrangement with the professional player with an additional cost. It also provided a service called Banter Chess; With this service, spectators watched two Masters play a game while explaining their moves and thoughts out loud, allowing the spectators to learn how high-ranked players conduct their games. Lectures about playing chess professionally were also given by the many Masters on the site.
For players not currently playing games, the network offered regular chat channels so that players could schedule or discuss games, among other things.
The interface used by the website was the a proprietary chess software called Mgichess. The software has arrangements to try to detect players using the assistance of chess programs. It does this by detecting changes in window input focus, based on information on the activities being undertaken on the computer that the program is able to detect.
The World Chess Network was originally created as an Internet chess server by Master Games International, Inc. with the support of chess philanthropist Dato Tan Chin Nam. [2] It was home to many recognized chess Grandmasters and International Masters such as Susan Polgar, [3] Larry Christiansen [1] and Larry Evans. [4]
In the 1999 policy board meeting of the United States Chess Federation, a proposal was made for a strategic alliance between the World Chess Network and the USCF. [5]
On 29 May 2007, WCN was bought by the Internet Chess Club. It was then merged with Chess Live, another Internet chess server acquired by Internet Chess Club from GamesParlor. The result of the acquisition and merger was the formation of World Chess Live, a new Internet chess server that merged features of both services. [2]
The site itself has been reviewed on Chess Central, a notable online chess resource, by chess grandmaster, Susan Polgar. [3] Polgar has also referred to the World Chess Network as a major chess "company". [6] Another well-known online chess website, ChessBase, has featured the World Chess Network in at least one article. The article featured a match on the network between American Grandmaster (GM) Larry Christiansen and the Canadian International Master (IM) Pascal Charbonneau. [1] The network has also received attention from other chess-specialty sites such as Chessville. [4] The site also has been featured as a popular chess play site on About.com. [7]
Judit Polgár is a Hungarian chess player. She is generally considered the strongest female chess player of all time. Since September 2015, she has been inactive as a tournament player. In 1991, Polgár achieved the title of Grandmaster at the age of 15 years and 4 months, at the time the youngest to have done so, breaking the record previously held by former World Champion Bobby Fischer. She was the youngest ever player to break into the FIDE top 100 players rating list, ranking No. 55 in the January 1989 rating list, at the age of 12. She is the only woman to qualify for a World Championship tournament, having done so in 2005. She is the first, and to date only, woman to have surpassed 2700 Elo, reaching a career peak rating of 2735 and peak world ranking of No. 8, both achieved in 2005. She was the No. 1 rated woman in the world from January 1989 until her retirement on 13 August 2014.
The Internet Chess Club (ICC) is a commercial Internet chess server devoted to the play and discussion of chess and chess variants. ICC had over 30,000 subscribing members in 2005. It was the first Internet chess server and is the first and largest pay to play chess server.
Correspondence chess is chess or variant chess played by various forms of long-distance correspondence, often through a correspondence chess server, a public internet chess forum, email, or the postal system. Less common methods that have been employed include fax, homing pigeon and phone. It is in contrast to over-the-board (OTB) chess, where the players sit at a chessboard at the same time, or play at the same time remotely.
Larry Melvyn Evans was an American chess grandmaster, author, and journalist. He won or shared the U.S. Chess Championship five times and the U.S. Open Chess Championship four times. He wrote a long-running syndicated chess column and wrote or co-wrote more than twenty books on chess.

Sofia Polgar ; born November 2, 1974) is a Hungarian and Israeli chess player, teacher, and artist. She is a former chess prodigy. She holds the FIDE titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster and is the middle sister of Grandmasters Susan and Judit Polgár. She lives in Israel and has worked as a chess teacher and artist.
Larry Mark Christiansen is an American chess player of Danish ancestry. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 1977. Christiansen was the U.S. champion in 1980, 1983, and 2002. He competed in the FIDE World Championship in 1998 and 2002, and in the FIDE World Cup in 2013.
Professor Yona Kosashvili MD is an Israeli chess Grandmaster and surgeon. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, he moved to Israel as a child. Kosashvili is one of the few people in the world to have earned both of the titles MD and GM. He is an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in a variety of procedures including arthroscopy and total joint replacement. Prof. Kosashvili is Head of Orthopedic Department at the Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot, Israel. Dr Kosashvili is actively involved in academics through his role as Clinical Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery at Tel Aviv University. Although he never played chess professionally, he holds the title of International Chess Grandmaster. In 1995 he was ranked 93rd in the world.
The Amber chess tournament was an annual invitation-only event for some of the world's best players, from 1992 to 2011. Since the second edition, the event uniquely combined blindfold chess and speed chess, and has been held in Monte Carlo. The tournament was sponsored by the Dutch businessman and world champion of correspondence chess, Joop van Oosterom. Named after his daughter, the tournament was usually held in March. Her sister was the eponym to the Crystal Kelly Cup.
Ray Robson is an American chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2010. Robson fulfilled the requirements for the title in 2009 at the age of 14 years, 11 months and 16 days.
The World Rapid Chess Championship is a chess tournament held to determine the world champion in chess played under rapid time controls. Prior to 2012, the FIDE gave such recognition to a limited number of tournaments, with non-FIDE recognized tournaments annually naming a world rapid champion of their own. Since 2012, FIDE has held an annual joint rapid and blitz chess tournament and billed it as the World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships. FIDE also holds the Women's World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship. The current rapid world champion is the Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen. ChessCube.com was an online chess community with over 1,400,000 registered members. ChessCube.com was founded in 2007 by Mark Levitt, and offered live play, chat, and ChessCube Cinema. In 2009, ChessCube hosted the world's first FIDE-rated online matches played in the SA Open 2009 where arbiters were present near players computer as supervisor. On January 31, 2020, ChessCube officially ceased operations.
The International Chess Federation, FIDE, awards several performance-based titles to chess players, up to and including the highly prized Grandmaster (GM) title. Titles generally require a combination of Elo rating and norms. Once awarded, FIDE titles are held for life, though a title may be revoked in exceptional circumstances. Open titles may be earned by all players, while women's titles are restricted to female players. Many strong female players hold both open and women's titles. FIDE also awards titles for arbiters, organizers and trainers.
Ronen Har-Zvi is an Israeli chess player and writer. Har-Zvi won the under-16 title at the World Youth Chess Champion in 1992. He has held the title of Grandmaster of chess since 1995.
Chessgames.com is an Internet chess community with over 224,000 members. The site maintains a large database of chess games, where each game has its own discussion page for comments and analysis. Limited primarily to games where at least one player is of master strength, the database begins with the earliest known recorded games and is updated with games from current top-level tournaments. Basic membership is free, and the site is open to players at all levels of ability, with additional features available for Premium members. While the primary purpose of Chessgames.com is to provide an outlet for chess discussion and analysis, consultation games are periodically organized with teams of members playing either other teams of members or very strong masters, including a former US champion and two former world correspondence champions. Members can maintain their own discussion pages, and there are features to assist study of openings, endgames and sacrifices. The front page also features a puzzle of the day, player of the day, and game of the day, the puzzle varying in difficulty throughout the week from "very easy" on Mondays to "insane" on Sundays.

The site has a freemium model in which some features are available for free, and others for accounts with subscriptions. Live chess can be played against other users at rapid, blitz or bullet time controls, with a number of chess variants available. Chess versus an AI, computer analysis, chess puzzles and teaching resources are also offered.
Daniel Rensch is an American chess master, event organizer, lecturer, and commentator. He holds the Arizona state record for youngest national master at 14 years old. He is the president of American Chess Events LLC and chief chess officer of Chess.com.
Chess Today was the first, and is the longest running, Internet-only daily chess newspaper, having continued virtually uninterrupted since 7 November 2000. It is distributed to subscribers by e-mail. Each e-mail has the PDF of the newspaper attached, as well as a small collection of recent games. The editor and proprietor of Chess Today is Grandmaster Alexander Baburin. Each edition contains at least one tactical puzzle, an annotated game, and world chess news. Other elements of the publication include 'On This Day', endgame analysis and chess reviews. Chess Today has also conducted and printed interviews with at least four former World Chess Champions.
