The World Law Foundation (WLF) is an international organization created by renowned jurists from around the world. Founded in 2019 as the executive branch of the World Jurist Association, its main purpose is the defense of the rule of law. It is based in Madrid, Spain.

History

The World Law Foundation (WLF) was created as a not-for-profit entity following the "Madrid Declaration" that closed the 2019 World Law Congress. It was registered on January 14, 2020, [1] and published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE) on September 14, 2020. [2]

Governance and people

The World Law Foundation is based in Madrid, Spain, and serves as the executive branch of the World Jurist Association (WJA) [3] (established 1963 at the first World Law Congress; based in the United States). [4]

The WLF is governed by a board of trustees and a series of executive committees. It is supported by public and private donations, and overseen by the Protectorado de Fundaciones of the Spanish Ministry of Justice.[ citation needed ]

As of 2023, lawyer Javier Cremades is chair of the board of trustees. [5]

Alfredo Dagnino, lawyer for the Spanish Council of State, is or was secretary.[ citation needed ] Its members include Colombian lawyer Ulises Fernández Rojas; [6] Lebanese lawyer Hachem Boulos, [7] James M. Black II, jurist and professor at Hofstra University; [8] and president of the Catalan Bar Council María Eugenia Gay. [9]

As of 2023 Javier Cremades is president of both WLF and the World Jurist Association. [5]

Purpose

The World Law Foundation is modeled on Winston Churchill's historic "Iron Curtain speech" (1946) that favored the law over the use of force. [10] Its objectives are the defense of the rule of law as a guarantee of progress; the promotion of dialogue between nations; respect for the law in international relations; and cooperation between the different legal and political actors in the different countries. [11]

Activities

The WLF undertakes research and publishes works; provides advice to entities, governments and other non-governmental bodies; and puts on educational and training projects.[ citation needed ]

Along with the WJA, the WLF co-organizes events such as the World Law Congress [ citation needed ] and the Environmental Sustainability Congress (CSMA). [12] The World Law Congress is held every two years and brings together conferences of different organizations. [13]

The World Law Congress, held in Madrid in February 2019 under the slogan "Constitution, Democracy and Liberty" was held over three days. It addressed several topics, including the relationship between democracy and the constitution; parliamentary monarchies or the rule of law and the reaffirmation of peace through the mechanisms of law. During the congress, the World Peace & Liberty Award was presented to King Felipe VI of Spain for his response to the sovereignty challenge in Catalonia. [14]

The World Law Foundation together with the World Association of Jurists award the World Peace & Liberty Award, which has been received by Winston Churchill, René Cassin, Nelson Mandela, King Felipe VI (2019), [15] and by Ruth Bader Ginsburg (2020), U.S. Supreme Court Justice and founder of the Women's Rights Section of the American Civil Liberties Union. Joan Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020. His practice is devoted primarily to lobbying for banking, financial services and insurance business interests. As an attorney, Burton has devoted a substantial part of the past 24 years to promoting the legal profession through his non-profit foundation. He is the author of the legal profession's first-ever legal thesaurus entitled Burton's Legal Thesaurus. Burton served as New York State Assistant Attorney General, as well as an Assistant New York State Special Prosecutor. Previously, Burton was Director of Government Affairs for one of the world's largest insurers, Continental Insurance.

The statue of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a 7 ft (2.1 m) bronze statue of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. It was installed outside 445 Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn's City Point in New York City on March 12, 2021. The statue was moved to South Brooklyn Health in October 2022 and is located inside the lobby of the facility's Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, which opened on May 2, 2023.

Javier Cremades is a Spanish lawyer, founder and president of the international law firm Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo. He taught constitutional law for 15 years. He is known for leading the international defence of Venezuelan politician Leopoldo López. Since 2019 and as of January 2025, Cremades has been president of the World Jurist Association.

Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo is a law firm headquartered in Madrid with locations in eight countries. Founded in Madrid in 1995, the firm is chaired by Javier Cremades, founding partner, and integrates lawyers specialized in several disciplines of law.

The World Peace & Liberty Award is a recognition granted since 1965 by the World Jurist Association, recognizing outstanding world personalities for their role in the defense of the Rule of Law in opposition to the use of force.

The World Jurist Association (WJA), formerly known as the World Peace Through Law Center, is a non-governmental organization based in the United States that aims to strengthen and increase the rule of law around the world through cooperation. It has special consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It organises conferences and congresses, including the World Law Congress, held in different countries each year. It also awards various medals, including the World Peace & Liberty Awards and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Medals of Honor. As of January 2025 Spanish lawyer Javier Cremades is president of the WJA.
