XCOPY is a London based digital artist associated with crypto art and NFTs. His real identity is unknown. [1] He creates digital glitched artworks usually concerning death, dystopia and apathy through flashing imagery and distorted loops, with hints to the cryptocurrency community regarding concepts, mood and terminology. He is one of the highest selling NFT artists. [2]
XCOPY started his digital artist career posting on the social media platform Tumblr, in August 2010. He posted more than a thousand individual works (other than August 2014 [3] ) for more than a decade. [4]
XCOPY is known as one of the earliest digital artists to make NFTs out of his artworks. His artworks were first turned into NFTs in 2018, in platforms like SuperRare and others. [5] Throughout the years, XCOPY's art became more popular both in and out the Crypto communities, gaining further recognition, consistently ranking amongst the top selling NFT artists and establishing record sales amongst digital and traditional art. On August 1, 2022 XCOPY released his work under a Creative Commons CC-zero license, [7] relinquishing copyrights to his works which were not collaborations or derivative content, and dedicating those rights to the public domain. CC0 licensing has been used to increased artwork visibility and usage, incentivizing people to remix his work and create derivatives. [8]
Right-Click and Save As Guy is one of XCOPY's best known artworks. The artwork takes aim at[ failed verification ] those who think saving, or screenshotting an image is the same as owning its related NFT. [9] The piece started receiving attention on 13 March 2021, in a BBC World News article. [10] It was bought for about $7,000,000 on 9 December 2021, making it one of the highest selling digital artworks. [11]
On 3 March 2022, XCOPY launched via the NFT platform "Async" the collection "Grifters", 666 different images commonly used as avatars/online identities amongst the cryptocurrency communities. [12]
On 24 March 2022, XCOPY auctioned on NFT platform Nifty Gateway a series of five artworks called "Max Pain and Frens". "Max Pain", the main artwork of the series, was auctioned to be a ten minutes Open Edition, purchasable from 6:30 PM to 6:40 PM PST by anyone at a fixed price of $3100, with no limits of quantity. It reached the highest Open Edition selling price, at more than $24,000,000 in ten minutes. [13] [14]

In his art, he uses various media to create comical, phantasmagoric works which make political and social commentary while using pop culture figures as references. British auction house Christie's said he is, "A visionary digital artist at the forefront of NFTs". Beeple was introduced to NFTs in October 2020 and credits Pak for providing his first "primer" on selling NFTs. The NFT associated with Everydays: the First 5000 Days, a collage of images from his "Everydays" series, was sold on March 12, 2021, for $69 million in cryptocurrency to an investor in NFTs. It is the first purely non-fungible token to be sold by Christie's. The auction house had previously sold Block 21, an NFT with accompanying physical painting for approximately $130,000 in October 2020.
