Xhezair Shaqiri (born 15 May 1965), also known as Commander Hoxha, is a Macedonian politician of Albanian descent, Imam and a former member of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and National Liberation Army (NLA).

In 1998 he joined the KLA as a soldier and later became one of the first NLA commanders. During his participation in the Kosovo War, he first participated in the Battle of Glođane, in which the Yugoslav Army was defeated and had to retreat. [3] He later was put into a unit under the command of Agim Ramadani with who he fought the Yugoslav Army during the Koshare ambush. [3]

After the Kosovo War, He joined the NLA and was active in the Karadak region mainly in the villages of Tanuševci and Lipkovo and Aračinovo. He was the direct perpetrator of the murder of Јane Јakimovski, a Macedonian commander, in the shopping center Chairchanka in Skopje. [4]

On 24 July 2001, he was placed on the Macedonian blacklist of citizens and 3 days later he was placed on the blacklist list of US President George W. Bush. [5] [6]

Albanian nationalism was a central tenet of the KLA and many in its ranks supported the creation of a Greater Albania, which would encompass all Albanians in the Balkans, stressing Albanian culture, ethnicity and nation.

The 2001 insurgency in Macedonia was an armed conflict which began when the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army (NLA) insurgent group, formed from veterans of the Kosovo War and Insurgency in the Preševo Valley, attacked Macedonian security forces at the beginning of February 2001, and ended with the Ohrid Agreement, signed on 13 August of that same year. There were also claims that the NLA ultimately wished to see Albanian-majority areas secede from the country, though high-ranking members of the group have denied this. The conflict lasted throughout most of the year, although overall casualties remained limited to several dozen individuals on either side, according to sources from both sides of the conflict. With it, the Yugoslav Wars had reached Macedonia. The Socialist Republic of Macedonia had achieved peaceful independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

The Insurgency in the Preševo Valley was an approximately two year-long armed conflict between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the ethnic Albanian separatists of the Liberation Army of Preševo, Medveđa and Bujanovac (UÇPMB). There were instances during the conflict in which the Yugoslav government requested KFOR support in suppressing UÇPMB attacks since they could only use lightly armed military forces as part of the Kumanovo Treaty that ended the Kosovo War, which created a buffer zone between FR Yugoslavia and Kosovo.

Sylejman Selimi is the former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, military organisation, who was convicted of war crimes for the torture and inhuman treatment of prisoners at the Likovac detention center during the Kosovo War. After the war, he served as Security Force of the Republic of Kosovo; he left this position in 2011 and became the ambassador to Albania.

He was killed in action during the Battle of Košare. After the war, he was declared Hero of Kosovo.

Fadil Nimani was a Kosovar Albanian insurgent commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the Kosovo War (1998–99), and of the National Liberation Army (NLA) during the Macedonian Conflict (2001), in which the Albanian population sought independence of Albanian-inhabited areas in FR Yugoslavia and Republic of North Macedonia, respectively. He was appointed commander of the 114th Brigade of the NLA, active in the Kumanovo region, and had about 150 people under his command. He was killed by Macedonian special forces in an operation during the Macedonian Conflict, on 25 May 2001. Rahim Beqiri, or better known as Komandant Roki, was an army commander in the KLA during the Kosovo War of the late 1990s. He was born in Koprivnica, Kosovo.

Mujdin Aliu was an Albanian soldier who gained prominence in the Kosovo War. He served in the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), where he fought in the Battle of Koshare.

The Brest attack was an attack by Albanian rebels of the National Liberation Army (NLA), near the village of Brest on 10 March 2001 during the insurgency in Macedonia. Albanian rebels ambushed a Macedonian convoy, after they were defeated and forced to withdraw by KFOR troops in the village of Tanuševci.

Beqir Sadiku, also known as Komandant Sllupçani, was an Albanian commander and prominent fighter of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), National Liberation Army (NLA). He played a significant role in the Kosovo War, the Insurgency in the Presevo Valley, and the Insurgency in Macedonia (2001). As a commander he participated in numerous battles such as the Battle of Pastrik, the Battle of Slupčane and the Battle of Aračinovo.

The Battle of Tanuševci was the first gun battle between the National Liberation Army (NLA) and the Macedonian security forces in the insurgency in Macedonia.
