Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi Province. A sub-provincial city on the Guanzhong Plain, the city is the third most populous city in Western China, after Chongqing and Chengdu, as well as the most populous city in Northwest China. Its total population was 12,952,907 as of the 2020 census. The total urban population was 9.28 million.

It is used mainly for football matches and athletics events. The stadium had a capacity of 50,100 people, but a renovation in 2020 reduced it to 43,000. It was named Coca-Cola Stadium from 2005 to 2007.

The Nanjing–Xi'an railway or Ningxi railway, is a major trunkline railroad in China connecting Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province and Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province. The Chinese name for the line, Ningxi, is named after the two terminal cities, Ning, the Chinese character shorthand for the city of Nanjing, and Xi for Xian. The line is 1,196 km (743 mi) in length and comprises the Xi’an-Hefei section in the west, 1,196 km (743 mi) in length, that opened on January 7, 2004. And the high-speed Hefei–Nanjing section in the east, better known as the Hefei–Nanjing passenger railway, 166 km (103 mi) in length opened on April 18, 2008. In addition, a connection line 72 km (45 mi) in length was built in 2004 connected the main line in Sui County and the Hankou–Danjiangkou railway in northern Hubei. The Ningxi railway passes through five provinces in central and eastern China. Major cities along route include Nanjing and Pukou in Jiangsu Province; Feidong, Hefei and Lu'an in Anhui Province; Huangchuan, Xinyang, Nanyang and Xixia County in Henan Province and Shangluo, Weinan and Xian in Shaanxi Province. The main line skirts Hubei Province near Sui County.

The China International Silk Road Center is a supertall skyscraper under construction in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. The original design called for a 501-meter (1,644 ft)-tall building, but the height was changed to 498-meter (1,634 ft) because of new skyscraper regulations in China. The skyscraper will be the tallest in Xi'an. It is being developed by Chinese developer Greenland Group.
The Baoji–Zhongwei railway is a railway line in northwest China: it starts in Baoji in Shaanxi, passes through Pingliang in Gansu and finally ends in Zhenluobao (镇罗堡) in Zhongwei in Ningxia, with a total length of 498.19 kilometres. Construction on the railway started in 1990 and track laying was completed on 10 July 1994. It was electrified and opened in the following year on 8 June 1995. The railway is under the jurisdiction of the Xi'an Railway Bureau in Shaanxi and the Lanzhou Railway Bureau in Gansu and Ningxia. The line is single-track and electrified. It is a key line connecting Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia.
The 14th National Games of China (中华人民共和国第十四届运动会), commonly known as Shaanxi 2021 (陕西2021), was a multi-sports event held throughout Shaanxi from September 15 to 27, 2021. It is projected that the Games will attract around 20,000 athletes who will compete in 409 events in 35 sports. This will be the first event in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shaanxi Union Football Club is a Chinese professional football club based in Xi'an, Shaanxi, that competes in China League Two, the third tier of Chinese football. Shaanxi Union plays its home matches at the Weinan Sports Center Stadium in Weinan, Shaanxi. Initially founded in 2013 as Xi'an Huilong Football Club and later known as Binzhou Huilong Football Club and Shaanxi Chang'an Union Football Club, Shaanxi Union is the phoenix club of Shaanxi Chang'an Athletic, which dissolved in 2023.
The 2024 season is the second season in the existence of Shaanxi Union Football Club, and their first ever season in China League Two, the Chinese third-tier, following promotion in the previous season. In addition to the domestic league, the club are also participating in the Chinese FA Cup. On 26 January 2024, the club changed its name from Shaanxi Chang'an Union Football Club to Shaanxi Union Football Club.
