Yacoub Yousef Al-Mohana (born March 21, 1975) is a Kuwaiti film and musical director. He had worked musical videos of the Persian Gulf region's popular vocalists such as Rashed Al-Majed, Rahma Mezher and Ali Al Badr. He was noted for his many works of art, including paintings and poetry, and being a very well versed musician, as he acquired skills from his well-versed family of musicians. He has worked on many television commercials, documentaries and concerts. His recent clip was from a notably famous singer from Saudi Arabian artist Rashed Al-Majed song entitled "El Batool".

Early life

Yacoub or Jacob as known to his friends was born in Kuwait. His father was the artistic Kuwaiti musician Yousef Al-Muhanna, and his mother a Lebanese national. He grew up in an artistic family, with a love of art, music and poetry. He learned expertise in music from his uncle, singer and poet, Abdul Mohsen Al-Muhanna Majid Al-Muhanna. Though he grew up in a family of musicians, he chose the field of filmmaking and television for self-expression and artistic passion. He completed high school in the New English School (Kuwait), attended College in City University of Seattle and pursued postgraduate studies in Master of Business Administration in Arab Academy of Science. To develop his artistic talent he traveled to Germany (Hamburg and Wuppertal) and Barcelona, Spain to get expertise in the field of directing and to hone his talent in the field of directing and cinematography.

Kung Fu Sanda

Apart from being a director, Yacoub managed to acquire another skill, of martial arts. Though it may be taken as a hobby, this Kung Fu Sanda as he refers to himself, has won the first bronze medal in the Gulf Kuwaiti official weight of 90 kg. in the Arab Championship in Jordan, in two consecutive years, 2008 and 2009. Though he may have devoted himself as a director, his mental focus could not be restrained from directing only. His strong determination and drive brought him to become a karate champion with an outstanding expertise in martial arts of Islam Fouad of Egypt.

It is characterized by heavy use of the oud and other string instruments such as the violin, the occasional use of bagpipes, and the inclusion of percussion instruments such as the mirwas, tabl, and duff drums. Khaliji incorporates elements of African, Indian, and Iranian music overlaying indigenous Arabian genres such as Samri, Liwa, and Sawt. Kuwait pioneered the Khaliji genre into its modern form in the second half of the 20th century and soon became the focal point of the industry in a fashion similar to Cairo and Beirut in the case of Arabic pop music. Kuwaitis, in addition to Saudis, were also among the first commercial recording artists and composers in the Persian Gulf region and the Khaliji scene continues to be dominated primarily by Saudi, Kuwaiti, and Bahraini artists and composers today.

Abu Bakr Salem Balfaqih was a Saudi-Yemeni singer born on March 17, 1939 in Tarim,Hadhramout. He is also nicknamed Abu Aseel, The Father of Khaleeji Music ., and The one with the golden larynx. Abu Bakr is famously known in the Arab world by his unique riveting voice. He is one of the few musicians in the Arab world who succeeded at being a singer, poet, and composer at the same time and thus, he is considered a complete artist. Before drawing his path in the music world, Abu Bakr worked as a teacher for three years, drawing on his training at a teachers’ institute in Yemen. Some of Abu Bakr's patriotic odes to Yemen celebrated the significant historical events such as the abolition of the monarchy in the north in 1962, the independence of the south in 1967, and the unification of both the South and North Yemen in 1990. In addition to the Yemeni nationality, Abu Bakr also held the Saudi nationality after he moved to Saudi Arabia in the 70's. During his musical career, he worked with other pioneers in the Khaleeji music field including Talal Maddah, Tariq Abdul-Hakim and Shadi Gulf. His last release was a duet with young Yemeni singer and winner of the “Khaleeji Star” Fouad Abdulwahed. Abu Bakr Salem died on December 10, 2017.

Mohammed bin Said bin Salim Al Shanfari was an Omani dramatist playwright and director who was born on 26 December 1949. It was said of him that “His ideas inspired a generation.” He spent his working life advancing the cause of drama and the theatre. He received several awards in recognition of his work together with favourable reviews in Arabian media while he was alive, and also after his death.

Born in the village of Al Jasra, he held several government jobs in his youth, and then became a self-employed poet and writer. He represented his country at a number of literary conferences in several Arab capitals. As the author of several collections of poetry, he saw his first four collections printed as العناقيد الأربعة in 1980.
