Debesay comes from a cycling family; his brothers Ferekalsi Debesay and Mekseb Debesay, as well as his sister Mossana Debesai are also cyclists.

He won the 2014 Tour d'Algérie. He is the brother of fellow racing cyclists Mossana Debesai, Ferekalsi Debesay, Yakob Debesay and Kindishih Debesay.
