Yau Usman Idris is a Nigerian nuclear physicist and the current director general (CEO) of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA). [1] He was appointed by Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. [2] [3] [4]

Early life and education

Idris was born in Kauru, Local Government Area of Kaduna State. [5] He obtained his B.Sc in physics at the University of Maiduguri in 1988, M.Sc. in physics at the University of Ibadan in 1992, and PhD in nuclear physics at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1998. [6]

He also obtained a certificate in BPTC - reactor safety, nuclear technology from Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, South Korea in 2013. Another certificate was also obtained from Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, Illinois in nuclear power plant development in 2009. [7]

Career

Idris worked in various places nationally and internationally in the field of nuclear and now is the director general of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA). [8] [6]

He was appointed as commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru Ahmed El-rufai from August 2015 to February 2016. [9] [10]

He was then a lecturer researcher, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1999 to April 2004, and then lecturer researcher, Department of Physics, University of Maiduguri from 1989 to 1999. [7]

Moreover, in the international responsibility of nuclear safety, he is a Vice Chairman of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRA), [11] African Regional Co-ordinator of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), [2] Advisory Board Member of the African Nuclear Business Platform (AFNBP), and Co-ordinator of the Website of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA). He has received several awards such as international Leadership Gold Award for Excellent, Nigerian Self-service Gold Award (NISSGA) and Legends' Noble Award [13]

He is the Secretary of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Body in Africa (FNRBA), Advisory Board Member for African Nuclear Business Platform ( AFNBP), Member Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Body in Africa (FNRBA), Nigerian Society for Radiation Protection (NSRP), Member Nigerian Institute of Physics (MNIP), and Member, Material Society of Nigeria (MMSN) [13]

Barewa College is a college in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. Founded in 1921 by British Governor General Hugh Clifford, it was originally known as Katsina College. It switched its name to Kaduna College in 1938 and to Government College, Zaria in 1949 before settling on Barewa College. It is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most-celebrated post-primary schools there up to the early 1960s. The school is known for the large number of elites from the region who attended and counts among its alumni include Tafawa Balewa who was Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966, four heads of state of Nigeria. The school is located along Gaskiya road in the Tukur -Tukur area of Zaria.

Nenadi Esther Usman is a Nigerian politician and former federal Minister of Finance. She was elected senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing the Kaduna South Senatorial District in the April 2011 elections, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

Air Vice-Marshal Usman Mu'azu (1942–2008) was the military governor of Kaduna State, Nigeria, from January 1984 to August 1985 during the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari. Mu'azu was born in Kwoi, Northern Region of Nigeria, in 1942. He attended Provincial Secondary School, Zaria, and the Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He attended the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, and had further training in West Germany and the United States of America. Mukhtar Ramalan Yero is a Nigerian politician who served as the governor of Kaduna State from 2012 to 2015, following the death of Patrick Yakowa in a helicopter crash. He previously served as deputy governor from 2010 to 2012 and as Kaduna State Commissioner of Finance from 2007 to May 2010 when Yakowa named him deputy governor after he succeeded Namadi Sambo who became the vice president of Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Muhammad as Deputy Governor on 15 September 2023. Dattijo served as a policy adviser at the Executive Office of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in New York. Dattijo formed the core team that developed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dattijo resigned from this appointment to serve the Nigerian government as the Commissioner for Budget and Planning in Kaduna State. He published a book titled "Disruption Rethinking Governance to work for the Poor." On 2 July 2023.

The 2023 Kaduna State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Kaduna State, concurrent with elections to the Kaduna State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The Ahmadu Bello University is a public research university located in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. It was opened in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria.
