In his most recent election in 2016, he was re-elected with 64% of the vote over Democrat Ron Crumpton. In February 2021, Shelby announced that he would not seek re-election to a seventh term, which resulted in the first open Senate seat since 1996 and the first in this seat since 1968.

Pink-slime journalism is a practice in which American news outlets publish poor-quality news reports which appear to be local news. Researchers and media credibility raters have observed pink-slime journalism being used to support Republican Party politicians or policies, and have also cited examples of its use to promote Democratic Party policies and politicians. The use of these websites to gather user data has also been observed. The reports are either computer-generated or written by poorly-paid outsourced writers, sometimes using pen names. One network consisting of at least 1,200 local news websites was created by American conservative news businessman Brian Timpone.
