The Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately 1,144,000 km2 (442,000 sq mi) and a 2016 census population of 41,790, it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. Its estimated population as of 2021 is 45,515. Yellowknife is the capital, most populous community, and only city in the territory; its population was 19,569 as of the 2016 census. It became the territorial capital in 1967, following recommendations by the Carrothers Commission.

The 2012 NWT/Yukon Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the women's provincial curling championship for the Yukon and Northwest Territories, were originally scheduled for January 26 to 29 at the Yellowknife Curling Club in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. However, due to no entries into the Yukon Ladies Championship, the Northwest Territories Ladies Championship, held January 13–15, at the Inuvik Curling Club, in Inuvik, was used to determine a representative for the Yukon/Northwest Territories. Kerry Galusha and her team from Yellowknife won the tiebreaker final, and the right to represent Yukon/Northwest Territories, at the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Red Deer, Alberta, where Galusha would finish round robin with a 4-7 record.
The Northwest Territories Scotties Tournament of Hearts is the women's territorial championship for women's curling in the Northwest Territories. Beginning in 2015, the event serves as a direct qualifier to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Canada's national women's curling championships. Prior to 2015, the event served as a qualifier for the Yukon/NWT Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Katrina Nokleby is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2019 election. She represents the electoral district of Great Slave, and she was elected to the territorial executive committee on October 24, 2019. Until August 2020 her Cabinet portfolio included Minister of Infrastructure, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, and Minister Responsible for the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission, but was removed from such ministerial positions by Premier Caroline Cochrane sighting a “failure to manage her office”. On August 26 2020 the Legislative Assembly voted 16 to 1 to remove Ms. Nokelby from cabinet.
Caroline Wawzonek is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2019 election. She represents the electoral district of Yellowknife South, and was elected to Premier Caroline Cochrane's cabinet by the new cohort of territorial MLAs on October 24, 2019. Currently, Caroline is Minister of Finance, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, Minister responsible for the Status of Women, and Minister responsible for the Business Development and Investment Corporation. Previously she was Minister of Justice, but a cabinet shuffle resulted in new portfolios.
Rylund Johnson is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2019 election. He represents the electoral district of Yellowknife North.

The Dead North Film Festival was an annual film festival in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, which presented a lineup of horror, fantasy and science fiction films. The festival had a special focus on films made in Arctic areas, such as the Canadian territories, Scandinavia, Greenland, Iceland and Russia.
