History
York was founded in 1959 with 12 seventh-grade boys and two teachers. [1] For the first year, only seventh-grade boys were admitted, but it was planned that a grade would be added each year as the class advanced until a full high school was in session. Later, the seventh grade was dropped. It was decided that the Episcopal school would be called York after the Diocese of York in England, one of the oldest in existence. The coat of arms of the See of York was adopted as the school's slogan and is still in use today. [2]
York started in Pacific Grove, but was soon moved to Monterey. It was a day school until dormitories could be built in 1964. The same year, the new Laguna Seca campus was opened, where York remains today. Later, for various reasons, including financial constraints, York stopped accepting boarding students. The dorms were converted into classrooms and the boarders were sent to a house in Pacific Grove, called the “pink house,” where they finished their education as the last class to include boarding students.
York would see many more changes in the ensuing years. In 1970, York became coeducational. In 1973, it became non-diocesan. The land still belongs to the Episcopal Church and will return to the Church if York dissolves. However, York is not as closely affiliated with the Church as it had been in the past. As the school grew, more electives were added to the curriculum, such as art and choral music. Originally, York had no official sports teams, but in time various teams were formed.
Cranbrook Schools is a private PK–12 educational institution located on a 319-acre (129 ha) campus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It includes a co-educational elementary school, a middle school with separate schools for boys and girls, and a co-educational college-preparatory high school with boarding facilities. Cranbrook Schools is part of the Cranbrook Educational Community (CEC), which includes the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and Cranbrook House and Gardens. Christ Church Cranbrook is also on campus. The Cranbrook community was established by publishing mogul George Booth, who bought the site of today's Cranbrook community in 1904. Cranbrook was designated a National Historic Landmark on June 29, 1989, for its significant architecture and design. It attracts tourists from around the world. Approximately 40 acres (160,000 m2) of Cranbrook Schools' campus are gardens.
Stevenson School is a coeducational, private school for boarding and day students in preschool through 12th grade. Its high school campus is in Pebble Beach, while its PK-8 campus is in an unincorporated area of neighboring Carmel.
Kent School is a private, coeducational, college preparatory boarding school in Kent, Connecticut, established by Frederick Herbert Sill in 1906. It is affiliated with the Episcopal Church of the United States. It has a long history as an "elite school, not a school for elites," and innovated the sliding-scale tuition model in the early 20th century.
Episcopal High School, founded in 1839, is a boarding school located in Alexandria, Virginia. The Holy Hill 130-acre (53-hectare) campus houses 440 students from 31 states, the District of Columbia and 16 countries. The school is 100-percent boarding and is the only all-boarding school of its caliber located in a major metropolitan area.
Santa Catalina School is a private school in California, United States, founded by Sister Margaret Thompson and the Dominican Order in 1950. Situated on a 36-acre hacienda-style campus, the Upper School is an all-girls boarding school that also accepts local students. The Lower and Middle School serves both boys and girls. Students are required to wear uniforms. The school emphasizes building a sense of community that challenges its students mentally and spiritually. Morgan Park Academy (MPA) is a coeducational, college preparatory, independent day school serving pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. It is located in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1873, Morgan Park Academy was formerly known as Mt. Vernon Military Academy, Morgan Park Military Academy (MPMA), briefly as the Illinois Military Academy, and Morgan Park Academy of the University of Chicago. Between 1892 and 1906 MPA had a very close connection with the University of Chicago, with its graduates being specifically groomed to enter the recently founded university.
Mount de Sales Academy (MDS) is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school in Macon, Georgia. It was originally founded in 1876 by five Sisters of Mercy, an order of nuns, as a boarding school for girls. It is the oldest independent school in Middle Georgia and the first to racially integrate. The school is located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah, operating on an independent basis.
Mid-Pacific Institute is a private, co-educational college preparatory school for grades preschool through twelve with an approximate enrollment of 1,538 students, the majority of whom are from Hawaii. The school offers programs of study in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Mid-Pacific School of the Arts (MPSA). Mid-Pacific Institute is located on 38 acres (150,000 m2) in Manoa, near the University of Hawaii, close to downtown Honolulu.

Evansville Day School (EDS) is a private, Jr. PreK-12 college-preparatory school located in Evansville, Indiana in the United States. It is the only independent, coeducational day school in Evansville and the surrounding region. To accommodate a wide range of grade levels, the school is separated into three divisions: Primary School, Middle School (5-8), and Upper School (9-12).
The Harvey School is a co-educational, college preparatory school near Katonah, New York, for students in grades 6 through 12. Brandon Hall School was the only independent, coeducational, college preparatory day and boarding school serving grades 6–12 in Sandy Springs, Georgia, United States, in Metro Atlanta. Located within a forested area along the Chattahoochee River, the school offered a broad range of athletic and arts-oriented opportunities and a variety of multi-cultural and travel experiences. The school had approximately 140 students. Annual high school tuition for day students was $30,250, while residence students were listed at $59,150. Scholarships and aid were available.

All Saints Day School is a private coeducational school for preschool through grade 8, located on 17 acres in Carmel, California. It was originally named after the first Episcopal bishop of California, William Ingraham Kip; the Bishop Kip School changed its name to All Saints' Episcopal Day School shortly after its founding in Pacific Grove, California in 1961.
Marjory Logan Gengler Smith is an American retired tennis player. In 1973, while a student at Princeton University, she was captain of the women's tennis team and led them to an undefeated season in 1972. She was the top ranked player at Princeton, the number one-ranked female player in the Eastern United States, and the first woman to be featured, as "Princeton's Best Athlete", on the cover of Princeton Alumni Weekly. In 1973, inspired by the Battle of the Sexes between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, Gengler took on Jeffrey Lewis-Oakes, the top ranked men's junior varsity player, but lost the match. Gengler competed at the US Open in mixed doubles in 1971, 1973, and 1974 and in doubles in 1971, as well as singles in 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971. She also competed at Wimbledon in mixed doubles in 1972. Gengler is married to retired professional tennis player Stan Smith.
