Frankie Fontaine (born October 1, 1988), better known by the stage name Young Kidd or YK the Mayor, is a Canadian rapper of aboriginal and Jamaican heritage. [1] He began performing in 2005 and has released multiple mixtapes, two albums and was nominated for two APCMA awards in 2010. [2] Fontaine has been successful in the Winnipeg rap scene. [3]

Early life

Fontaine was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended Tec Voc High School. [4] He began rapping in 2004 through a program called Mic Check. [5] Fontaine is of both Aboriginal and Jamaican descent. His mother is originally from Sagkeeng First Nation. and his father is originally from Kingston, Jamaica. Fontaine grew up majority of his life not knowing his father or having a relationship with his father until he turned 31. Fontaine spent his early years playing sports and loving Hip Hop music. He made his first song as a kid at 12 years old & showed his mother who In return told Him “it wasn’t that bad” & that moment motivated YK to continue working and practicing his craft. At the end of the day we all have Ms. Fontaine to thank for the creation of Young Kidd aka YK The Mayor. For giving birth to him and for inspiring him to keep making music and working at perfecting his craft. [6]

In 2008, Fontaine was forced to pay a $1200 fine and receive one year of probation after he was convicted of possessing a firearm. [8] In May 2009, Fontaine was charged with discharging a firearm for shooting into the ceiling of a sports bar in Winnipeg. He was then put on Bail Conditions after spending a month in jail. He sat on Bail Conditions with a 6pm curfew for 4 years until in May 2013 when he was convicted for the shooting and sentenced to 3 years federal time at Stony Mountain Institution. Fontaine was released after serving 2 years but trouble caught up with him again in 2015 2 months after being released. He was then charged with Possession for the purpose of trafficking and given another 3 years added to his original sentence. All in all YK spent just under 5 years in a Federal Correction Facility(Correctional Service Of Canada) [9]

Native American Hip Hop is hip hop culture practiced by people of Native American heritage, including Canadian First Nation hip hop artists. It is not a specific form of hip hop but varies in style along the lines of hip hop in general. Native Americans have been present in hip hop culture since its inception as breakdancers, DJs, rappers, and graffiti artists. The Native American contribution to hip hop can occasionally be veiled by the ethnic umbrella term of Hispanic or Latino, terms that may refer to Native Americans in certain contexts.

Grand Hustle Records, also known as Hustle Gang Music, is an American hip hop record label, founded in 2003, by American rapper T.I. and his manager Jason Geter. The label was distributed by Atlantic Records until December 2012, and has since operated as an independent record label. Its roster has included acts such as 8Ball & MJG, B.o.B, Killer Mike, Young Dro, DJ Drama, Meek Mill, Chip, Travis Scott,The OMG Girlz and Trae tha Truth, the latter of whom also served as the label's vice president. The label also houses a roster of record producers, which has included Lil' C, Mars and Nard & B.

Embarking on a musical career in 1998, he soon established himself as a prominent member of the Texas hip hop scene with his solo debut, Losing Composure (2003). Same Thing Different Day (2004) and Restless (2006) followed up, the latter of which was his debut on Rap-a-Lot Records.

Winnipeg's Most is a Canadian hip hop group, made up of the MC's Jon-C, Charlie Fettah, and formerly, Brooklyn. They were based in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jon-C and Brooklyn are both Aboriginal artists, and the group was featured in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary series 8th Fire. The group released two albums and a number of singles and videos, some of which were played on MuchMusic. The group won several Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in 2010, including the award for Best New Artist, and they won six APCMA's in 2011.

Cashville Records is an American independent record label based in Nashville, Tennessee, founded by rapper Young Buck. Initially founded as a southern branch of 50 Cent's G-Unit Records, the label became "Cashville Records" in late 2007 after a dispute between 50 Cent and Young Buck led to Buck being banned from using the G-Unit logo or name to distribute his music. The label has signed such acts as The Outlawz, C-Bo, Lil Scrappy, D4L and more.

Ritchie Acheampong, better known as Rich Kidd, is a Canadian hip hop recording artist, record producer and film/video director from Toronto, Ontario. He is a two-time nominee for the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year as a solo artist, garnering nominations at the Juno Awards of 2013 for The Closers and at the Juno Awards of 2014 for In My Opinion. In 2013, he formed the project Naturally Born Strangers with collaborators Tona and Adam Bomb. That group's debut release, The Legends League Presents: Naturally Born Strangers, won the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2015.
