Literacy is popularly understood as an ability to read and write in at least one method of writing, an understanding reflected by mainstream dictionaries. In this view, illiteracy would be considered to be the inability to read and write.
Adult education, distinct from child education, is a practice in which adults engage in systematic and sustained self-educating activities in order to gain new forms of knowledge, skills, attitudes, or values. It can mean any form of learning adults engage in beyond traditional schooling, encompassing basic literacy to personal fulfillment as a lifelong learner. and to ensure the fulfillment of an individual.

The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), formerly UNESCO Institute for Education, is one of six educational institutes of UNESCO. The Innovations in Reading Prize is an annual award given to organizations and individuals who "have developed innovative means of creating and sustaining a lifelong love of reading." The prize is awarded by the National Book Foundation, presenter of the National Book Awards. The Innovations in Reading prize was founded in 2009, and from 2009 to 2014, the National Book Foundation recognized up to five winners, who each received $2,500. Beginning in 2015, the Foundation began recognizing a single $10,000 prize winner each year, as well as four honorable mentions. Gilbert Rwabigwi is a Rwandan social innovator and writer who specialises in literacy, strategy, writing and progress. He is the founder of Youth Literacy Organisation (YouLI), a non-profit NGO whose mission is to foster literacy and learning as a lifelong process.

eLearning Africa is a three-day annual international conference on ICT-enhanced education, training and skills development in Africa which is organised by ICWE GmbH. Mejai Bola Mike Avoseh is a professor of adult and higher education at the University of South Dakota. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of adult education, comparative/international/multi-cultural education and indigenous pedagogy. He is a Member of the Board of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) since 2016, and of the International Society for Comparative Adult Education (ISCAE) from 2020 to 2023, and the Director of the Commission for International Adult Education (CIAE) of AAACE.
