Shanghai is one of the four direct-administered municipalities of the People's Republic of China (PRC). The city is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze River, with the Huangpu River flowing through it. The population of the city proper is the third largest in the world, with 24.89 million inhabitants in 2021, while the urban area is the most populous in China, with 39.3 million residents. The Shanghai Biennale is one of the highest-profile contemporary art events in Shanghai and the most established art biennale in China. It was initially held in the Shanghai Art Museum. From 2012 on, it has been hosted in Power Station of Art, the first state-run museum dedicated to contemporary art in mainland China. Shanghai Biennale provides artists, curators, writers and art supporters from around the world with a space to meet and exchange ideas about their experiences, works and inspirations to create international dialogues. It highlights the achievements of Asian artistic creativity and production and challenges the conventional division of the world between East and West. Aside from its main museum show, it also includes talks, lectures and installations in various venues throughout the city.
UCCA Center for Contemporary Art or UCCA is a leading Chinese independent institution of contemporary art. Founded in 2007 and located at the heart of the 798 Art District in Beijing, China, it welcomes more than one million visitors a year. Originally known as the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, UCCA underwent a major restructuring in 2017 and now operates as the UCCA Group, comprising two distinct entities: UCCA Foundation, a registered non-profit that organizes exhibitions and research, stages public programs, and undertakes community outreach; and UCCA Enterprises, a family of art-driven retail and educational ventures. In 2018, UCCA opened an additional museum, UCCA Dune, in Beidaihe, a seaside resort town close to Beijing. In 2021, a third site in Shanghai was opened, UCCA Edge. The museum had 385,295 visitors in 2020, and ranked 55th in the List of most-visited art museums in the world.
China Art Museum, Shanghai is a municipal art museum of Shanghai City. It is a public welfare institution funded by the Shanghai City Culture and Tourism Bureau.
Vangelis Rinas is a Greek painter and sculptor. He was born on Samos in 1966 and grew up on Ikaria. He holds an MFA from the Athens School of Fine Arts and lives and works in Athens and New York City. Since 1992, he has exhibited in Greece and abroad including solo shows at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing and at Tenri Cultural Institute in New York. Since 2000, he has presented three solo exhibitions named Endless Sailing. Some of his sculptures, featuring Chinese ideograms and Braille writing, have been installed in the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

Xiao Hui Wang is a Chinese artist, author and socialite who works mainly in photography, sculpture, design, and media art. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors; the city of Suzhou has named an art institution after her, a rare honor for a living artist. She has been profiled by the prestigious Hong Kong magazine Phoenix Weekly as one of the Top Fifty Most Influential Chinese Worldwide. She has been a professor at Shanghai's Tongji University since 2003, where she runs the Xiao Hui Wang Art Center. She divides her time between China and Germany.
Pan Deng is a Chinese contemporary artist and painter. He is the chairman of the YangJianhou Foundation and a member of Arts Mid-Hudson.
Fu Wenjun is a contemporary artist who works on photography, digital art, installation art, sculpture, and oil painting. He graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and currently lives and works at Chongqing. He has developed his concept and practices of “Digital Pictorial Photography” art style, which involves oil painting, photography, and digital art.
Chen Ke is a Chinese artist. She currently lives and works in Beijing. Having participated in numerous international and domestic exhibitions, Chen Ke has worked in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture and fashion design. Chen Ke is recognized as the most representative artist of the New Generation of Cartoon of China.

Xin Dongwang was a Chinese painter, regarded as one of the representative painters of contemporary Chinese neo-realist oil paintings by art critics and art historians. His works focus on the bottom and marginalized people in life, reflecting the times and people's livelihood issues in Chinese society since the reform and opening up.
Wang Nong was a Chinese artist born in Fengtian, Liaoning Province. His birth name was Litian, and he also went by the name "Guanwai Ren," or "Outsider." In 1949 he migrated to Taiwan, where he pursued a career in graphic design in textile factories as well as in comic creation. Eventually, he focused solely on his artistic pursuits, and received the first-place award in the Chinese painting category in the Zhongshan Literary and Art Creation Awards in 1978. After the lifting of martial law in Taiwan on July 15, 1987, Wang actively engaged in artistic exchanges between Taiwan and mainland China. Aside from ink paintings of horses, he also used characters from Chinese opera as a major creative theme.
Zhang Shengquan, also known as Datong Da Zhang(Chinese: 大同大张), was a prominent figure in Chinese contemporary art, known for his performance art on topics of isolation and struggle. He was one of the main members in art group W·R group.
