Yuma Sammang

Yuma Sammang is the goddess of the Limbu community of Nepal. The deity Yuma Sammang (literally: "Mother Earth" or "Grandmother"), also known as Ningwaphuma, is widely revered and regularly worshiped among Yakthungs (Limbus). Yakthungs generally regard Yuma as a maternal figure. The Yuma Samyo or Yuma religion was very popular during the Yet Hang and Thibong Yakthung (Ten Yakthung) ages.

After the Khas Aryan oppression in Yakthung laje (Limbuwan) and the introduction of Hinduism from the Indian mainland, the majority of Yakthungs had stopped following the Yuma religion for centuries. The Khas-Aryas also gave the term 'Kirata' to the tribes of the Himalayas (mostly eastern tribes). This has in time caused a false belief among sunuwars, yakhas, limbus and the thirty-two Rai tribes that they are all a part of the same ethnic group. Most of these groups, however, are very different from one another, only sharing cultural and linguistic similarities because of the geographical proximity of their respective settlements. One attribute of the Limbus that distinguishes them from the other so called 'Kiratas' is that they do not worship Sumnima and Paruhang. They typically worship Yuma Sammang with the exception of the Nembang Clan which recognizes Theba Sammang as its supreme deity.

Both tribes share the same Tibetan-Burmese language family, with the style and construction of language being similar to other Tibetan-Burmese languages across eastern Nepal, northeast India and part of southeast Asia. As such, certain words and phrases may be understood by both groups even today. They also share a common style of shamanism. Many deities and styles of worship rituals are similar, while the shamans recite similar Mundhumi/Mundumi phrases that are markedly different from the day-to-day vernacular of the Rai/Khambu and Limbu/Yakthung languages.

A lot of confusion has occurred since the founding of the Satyahangma Kirat Religion as it states that Sumnima-Paruhang and Yuma-Theba are the same, which is false. The Satyahangma Kirat Religion was created during the reign of the Ranas and it incorporated many Hindu traditions and rituals into the traditional Mundhum of the Limbus. While sharing similar terms [Mundhum{traditional}(Limbu) Mundum(Rai)], the stories within these separate oral traditions are composed of various characters and events. The linguistic, cultural, and physical differences such as the cranial height and nasal height and breadth provide evidence that Limbus and the other so called kiratas are not from the same ancestral family. Studies have also shown that Limbus are more closely related to Tibetans than the Rais and Sunuwars.

The Yakthung community is predominantly an oral culture. The body of its oral tradition is called Mundhum. Mundhum is a collection of diverse oral narratives addressing topics such as the creation of the universe, human beings, animals, and plants along with many other elements. The Yakthung culture includes Mundhum performers, such as Phedangma, Yeba, Yema, Shamba, Samma, and Tutu-Tumyahangs. Despite Western cultural colonization and the influence of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity, Yakthungs have preserved their culture via their Mundhums. However, many Yakthungs participating in mainstream politics, bureaucracy, and academic institutions have shown a tendency to ignore their Yakthung customary practices, Mundhums, language, and religion — Yuma Samyo. New Yakthung generations have been campaigning for the restoration of their culture, language, identity, Mundhum, and religion since 2018.

The indigenous people of Sikkim are the Lepchas; the naturalized ethnic populations of Limbus, Bhutias, Kiratis, & Indian Gorkha of Nepalese descendants who have an enduring presence in shaping the history of modern Sikkim. The indigeneity criteria for including all peoples of Sikkim and Darjeeling hills is a misnomer as it is clearly known that Lepchas are the first people who trace their origin and culture of their ethnogenesis to the historical and somewhat political geography of Sikkim history as is well documented by colonial and immigrant settler history. However many tribes preceded the migration of the colonial powers and can trace their migratory background as well as ancestral heritage and a well formed history of civilization and cultural locus that is not inherently indigenous to Sikkim.

History of Limbuwan is characterized by the close interaction of Limbuwan with its neighbours independent and semi-independent rule characterized by autonomy for most of its time.
