Yuri Lemeshev (born 1954 [1] or 1955 [2] ) is an American accordion player and former member of gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. [3] [4]

Biography

Lemeshev was born on the island of Sakhalin, RSFSR, Soviet Union. [5] [2] In 1989 he emigrated to the United States. He became popular in the East Village of New York City for his performances in bistros, wearing various hats and wigs. [6] He has shared the stage and recorded with Nicole Renaud, Greg Wall, Mary Wooten, and Matt Darriau, and worked in a trio called Tridruga with bassist Tony Scherr and guitarist Brad Shepik. [7] In 2001, he joined Gogol Bordello, [2] leaving the band in 2013. [8]

He started a duo with theremin player Pamelia Kurstin in 2007.

Folk punk is a fusion of folk music and punk rock. It was popularized in the early 1980s by The Pogues in Britain, and by Violent Femmes in the United States. Folk punk achieved some mainstream success in that decade. In more recent years, its subgenres Celtic punk and Gypsy punk have experienced some commercial success.

Eugene Hütz is a Ukrainian-born singer, composer, disc jockey and actor, most notable as the frontman of the Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello.

Karl Alvarez musician

Karl Matthew Alvarez is an American bassist and songwriter for both the Descendents and All, the band that resulted after the Descendents disbanded again in 1987. Alvarez joined the Descendents after the Enjoy! album from his previous bands The Massacre Guys and Bad Yodelers, and played on all of the All albums, and the Descendents albums All, Everything Sucks, Cool To Be You and "Hypercaffium Spazzinate". He plays finger style bass and provides backing vocals when live. Since joining the band he has been a major songwriter contributing many songs to All, Everything Sucks and Cool To Be You. In the summer of 2006 he joined Gypsy Punk band Gogol Bordello for part of the Van's Warped Tour and the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Karl currently plays guitar and sings in Endless Monster and the Vultures.

Gypsy punk musical genre

Gypsy punk is a hybrid musical genre that crosses traditional Romani music with punk rock. One of the first rock groups to incorporate elements of punk and Gypsy music was Motherhead Bug, which was active mostly in the early 1990s. A broader audience became aware of the genre after the band Gogol Bordello released the album Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike, with front man Eugene Hütz describing their performance as a "Gypsy Punk Cabaret".

Tamir Muskat Israeli musician

Tamir Muskat is an Israeli musician/producer-sound engineer who was born and raised in Petach Tikva, Israel as son of a Romanian immigrant. His father was the manager of Anzeagi Conservatorion for music in Petach Tikva. As a teenager, he was already a prominent rock drummer and percussionist. Early on, Tamir started producing Israel's first thrash metal records in his basement studio but also began working with Sephardic Eastern singers of Greek and Turkish origin in a highly ornamented style that is Middle Eastern in nature.

<i>Trans-Continental Hustle</i> 2010 studio album by Gogol Bordello

Trans-Continental Hustle is the fifth album by gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, released on April 27, 2010. Produced by Rick Rubin, Trans-Continental Hustle primarily draws inspiration from frontman Eugene Hütz's life in Brazil, where he had been living since 2008. This album is Gogol Bordello's major record label debut. The collaboration with Rubin was initiated after guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine saw Gogol Bordello perform in Los Angeles and recommended that Rubin look into the band. "Immigraniada ", the fifth track on the album, has received heavy airplay on Sirius XM Radio's Faction Channel 41 as well as other genre stations. At least two of Faction's shows have played the single, including Faction's The Jason Ellis Show and Faction with Christian James Hand.

Thomas Gobena Ethiopian musician

Thomas "Tommy T" Gobena is the bassist for Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. He is of Ethiopian descent and was born in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. He moved to Washington D.C. in 1987, at the age of 16, and joined Gogol Bordello in 2006. Aside from his work in Gogol Bordello, he also has released one solo album, titled The Prester John Sessions.

Boris Pelekh

Boris Pelekh is a Russian-born singer, composer, guitarist, most notable as the guitarist of the Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. He moved to New York City in 1991, at the age of 9, and joined Gogol Bordello in 2015. Aside from his work in Gogol Bordello, he also worked with the Nickelodeon duo Nat and Alex Wolff from 2008 - 2011.
