Yuta Kato is a Japanese American teacher, performer, and leader in North American taiko. Among other accomplishments in the North American taiko community, Kato currently performs as a member of UnitOne in Torrance, California, founded UCLA collegiate taiko group, Yukai Daiko, and co-founded the Los Angeles Taiko Institute (LATI). After discovering his love for taiko as a kid in 1991 through Kagami-Kai [3] , a rise-pounding group, Yuta Kato decided to start learning at San Francisco Taiko Dojo [4] (SFTD). This passion discovered at age 10 has only grown, as he has since traveled the world learning taiko and teaching the art to practitioners and artists. As an undergraduate at UCLA, Kato is often credited with starting Yukai Daiko [5] in 2004, an offshoot organization from UCLA's Kyodo Taiko [6] , though he says that he simply enabled the students’ access to having a space to play, and the formation of the group was out of his hands. Kato currently performs around the world with a number of professional groups.

Personal life

Yuta Kato was born and raised in California. Kato learned drum-making from his father, a practice that the two share to this day. Originally an engineering major, Kato aimed to keep a promise to his best friend that he would continue playing taiko and pursue a career as a professional musician. He also finds joy in sushi-making, and woodworking.

Taiko

Yuta has played for a number of groups, including UCLA Kyodo Taiko, Nihon Taiko Dojo, TAIKOPROJECT [7] , ON Ensemble [8] , Portland Taiko [9] , Los Angeles Taiko Institute (LATI), and most recently, UnitOne. [10] UnitOne takes inspiration from Kodo, [11] a world-renowned professional taiko group from Japan, and plans to be a part of their first ever collaboration project. UnitOne group was formed from instructors at LATI.

From 2007 to 2011, Kato moved to Japan to study taiko under masters of the art such as Tosha Kiyonari, Mochizuki Saburo, and Suzuki Kyosuke. He spent two years in Tokyo learning a very traditional style of taiko that is different than Kumi-daiko [12] which is popular in the United States today. After his time in Tokyo, he moved to Hachijō Island and spent another year learning what he described as a more folk-style way of playing. While there, he worked part-time at a supermarket, and then at a farm, where he was able to see many different ways of living that all had one thing in common, which is that everyone was involved with taiko in some way. There is a more relaxed lifestyle on the island in which taiko is often present as a background performance while the community socializes. Kato helped to start a school on Hachijō and holds classes for people with a wide range of interests in taiko: those who want to exercise, those who want to play recreationally, and others to learn to play like professionals. Kato describes Hachijō taiko as being similar to a club, where people come together for recreation and community, as compared to taiko in Tokyo which is more similar to a concert of classical music.

Yuta Kato describes taiko as a sport without the competitiveness. He appreciates the artistry, athleticism, and teamwork it imbues, while maintaining a more relaxed atmosphere where everyone is having fun. In his words, "success [in taiko] is not measured by you beating other people, but by being able to play together better." A natural leader, Kato aims to spread taiko as widely as he can. His focus is developing relationships between the musicians and their instruments, rather than teaching the history behind the art. As Kato says, “100 years from now no one will know where it [taiko] comes from and I’m cool with it. The only way to keep it around is to teach the quality.”

Gocoo, or GOCOO (ゴクウ) are originally seven female and four male Taiko drummers from Tokyo (Japan). On stage Gocoo performs with up to 16 artists. Gocoo performed at major Music & Arts, Blues & Roots, Rock & Pop and alternative Rock festivals, in live clubs, classic theatres and concert halls or at techno events. Lead drummer, Kaoly Asano (浅野香), attracts much attention as a female Taiko artist. Whenever not performing with Gocoo on stage, she teaches the art of playing the Taiko at her Tawoo Taiko Dojo in Tokyo.

Daihachi Oguchi was a Japanese drummer best known for popularizing taiko.

Shoji Kameda is a fourth-generation Japanese American musician and composer, and leading player of North American taiko. He is a founder and member of On Ensemble, a contemporary taiko quartet, and a former member of the jazz fusion group Hiroshima.

Seiichi Tanaka is the first Japan-trained teacher of kumidaiko, or taiko, in the United States and is largely regarded as the father of the art form in North America.

Kenny Endo is an American musician and taiko master. He is the leader of several taiko ensembles and regularly tours, performing traditional and contemporary taiko music. Endo is also the first non-Japanese national to receive a natori in the field of hogaku hayashi, Japanese classical drumming. Today Endo composes his own music and plays taiko professionally as a solo artist, with his ensembles, and in collaboration with other artists.

Kristofer Bergstrom is a leading American taiko player. He is a former member of Los Angeles-based taiko quartet, On Ensemble. In addition to taiko, Bergstrom plays the shamisen, koto, and turntable.

Stanford Taiko is a collegiate taiko group based at Stanford University. One of the first collegiate taiko groups to form in North America, it was founded in the winter of 1992 by students Ann Ishimaru and Valerie Mih as a way to share taiko with the university community. As the founding organization of the Intercollegiate Taiko Invitational, Stanford Taiko has been instrumental in the development of collegiate taiko throughout the United States, as well as the larger North American taiko community through performing at the Taiko Jam of the North American Taiko Conference. Since 2000, the group has been active in the international scene through tours and exchange concerts in countries such as Japan, China, and Thailand.

Denver Taiko is the fourth taiko group founded in North America and the first taiko ensemble outside of California, United States. The group has a close partnership with the Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple and performs throughout Colorado and neighboring states. In 2001, Denver Taiko received the Excellence in the Arts Award from Denver Mayor Wellington Webb. Today, Denver Taiko is an ensemble of third, fourth, and fifth generation Japanese Americans with a shared interest in honoring their Japanese American cultural heritage.

UCLA Kyodo Taiko is a collegiate taiko group specializing in taiko drumming. Founded in 1990, Kyodo is the first collegiate taiko group in the country. Kyodo is a Japanese term that means both "family" and "loud children." Many of Kyodo's members are not of Japanese descent.

Seattle Kokon Taiko is a North American taiko ensemble based in Seattle, Washington.

San Francisco Taiko Dojo, founded in 1968 by Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka, was the first taiko group in North America, and has been seen as the primary link between the Japanese and North American branches of the art form. Additionally, Tanaka's belief that learning to play taiko only requires a genuine interest in the art form, has greatly contributed to taiko's success and growth outside Japan.

Kinnara Taiko is a Japanese American drumming ensemble based out of Senshin Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles, US. They began playing taiko in 1969 when a few third-generation Japanese Americans gathered after an Obon festival and had an impromptu experimental session on an odaiko drum.

<i>Yatai-bayashi</i>

Yatai-bayashi is a traditional taiko piece inspired by an annual festival in Chichibu, Japan. The piece been performed by many taiko ensembles, and became well-known through dramatic variations of the piece developed by Ondekoza and Kodo. Yatai-bayashi has been recognized as a piece that requires great physical endurance.

Taikoz is a taiko ensemble based in Sydney, Australia. Formed in 1997, they are credited with not only being an early Australian taiko ensemble, but for also broadly expanding interest in taiko performance in Australian society.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Oedo Sukeroku Taiko</span> Musical artist

Oedo Sukeroku Taiko is a taiko group from Japan. It is considered the first taiko group to begin touring professionally and, sometimes, the first professional taiko group. The group formed in Tokyo in 1959, and is one of the oldest recognized taiko groups in Japan. Oedo Sukeroku Taiko has an eponymous style of performance, typically called Sukeroku style. They are also credited with popularizing taiko performance in North America.

Seidō Kobayashi is the founder and current leader of the Tokyo-based taiko group, Oedo Sukeroku Taiko. Under Kobayashi's leadership, his taiko group, founded in 1959, was the first to tour professionally. He is considered a master performer of taiko. Kobayashi was well known for attempting to assert intellectual control of the group's performance style, which many believe has influenced taiko performance among many groups, particularly in North America.

San Jose Taiko, founded in 1973, joined San Francisco Taiko Dojo and Kinnara Taiko as only the third Kumi-daiko, or ensemble taiko group, in North America. Initially a youth program at the San Jose Betsuin, a member of the Buddhist Churches of America, the group has evolved into a leading arts group not only in the Japanese American community but also in Asian American arts while maintaining unwaivering allegiance to Japantown, San Jose.
