Yws Gwynedd is a Welsh rock band from North Wales named for its lead singer Ywain Gwynedd.

Background

The band achieved acclaim after their debut album Codi / \ Cysgu ("wake-up /\ sleep" in Welsh) in 2014 which won Best LP at Y Selar music awards that year [1] and was nominated for best Welsh-language album at the Eisteddfod in 2015. [2]

Their second album was released in 2017 having been recorded in two weeks. It was nominated for the 2017 Welsh-language album of the year award. [3] [4] and won the best album at Y Selar's awards. [5]

The band perform regularly at Welsh music events and have headlined festivals such as Tafwyl [6] and Maes B. In 2015 they performed at Festival Number 6 on the Clough stage and returned in 2017. [7] They have performed on S4C and Radio Cymru multiple times. [8]

One of the band's guitarists, Ifan Davies, is also the lead singer of the band Sŵnami.

"Perta" (originally called "Hi yw y Berta"), the Welsh entry for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018, is written by lead singer Ywain. It was chosen internally by S4C and was performed by Manw, the winner of the national final of S4C's Chwilio am Seren . [9] Gwynedd has said that the lyrics were written with a focus on sounding nice to non-Welsh speakers, as well as being easy for viewers to sing along to. [10]

#40Mawr

#40mawr is a radio programme and compilation CD of the 40 most popular Welsh-language songs as voted for by listeners of Radio Cymru each year. In 2016 the band's song "Sebona Fi" topped the #40Mawr chart and "Neb ar Ôl" came 35th. [11] [12] The next year "Sebona Fi" and " Drwy dy Lygid Di" featured on the updated list in first and 33rd place respectively. [13]

Codi Cysgu is the debut album of Welsh singer Yws Gwynedd and his band. The album was released 6 years after the last album of Gwynedd's previous band Frizbee who disbanded in 2008. They had achieved some level of success in Wales, having appeared several times on Welsh television and radio. Codi /\Cysgu contains songs written by Yws over a period of 15 years.

Wales participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2018 and 2019. Welsh broadcaster Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C) has been responsible for the nation's participation in the contest.

Wales debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 held in Minsk, Belarus on 25 November 2018. The Welsh broadcaster S4C was responsible for organising their debut entry for the contest. Manw was selected through Chwilio am Seren to represent Wales, winning the televised national final on 9 October at the Venue Cymru in Llandudno. The winning song, "Hi yw y Berta", was chosen internally and written by Ywain Gwynedd.

The Y Selar Awards are awarded annually for the best Welsh language rock and pop music, by the Welsh language music magazine, Y Selar. The awards ceremony is the only one particularly for Welsh language music.

Gwilym (transl. William) are a Welsh-language pop rock group from Anglesey and Caernarfon. The band consists of members Ifan Pritchard, Llyr Jones, Llew Glyn, Rhys Grail, and Carwyn Williams. The group was founded in 2017.
