Cricket in Afghanistan is the most popular sport in the country, which is represented internationally by the Afghanistan national cricket team. Afghanistan's border with the Test playing nation of Pakistan has helped the game to take root. Pakistan's former batsman Inzamam ul Haq has coached the Afghan national team in the past. Afghanistan became a full member of the International Cricket Council on 22 June 2017, enabling the national team to participate in official Test matches.
The 2015–2017 ICC Intercontinental Cup was the seventh edition of the ICC Intercontinental Cup, an international first-class cricket tournament between leading associate members of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The 2018–19 Mirwais Nika Provincial 3-Day was the first edition of the Mirwais Nika Provincial 3-Day tournament, a first-class cricket competition in Afghanistan, that ran from 15 February to 15 March 2019. The five competing provincial sides were representing their regions after having come through regional qualifying events. In the final, the match finished as a draw, with Kabul Province declared as the winner, after taking a first innings lead.

However, despite the 2019 edition of the Provincial Challenge Cup having List A status, the same was not applied to the 2020 edition. Eight teams qualified for the tournament, and were divided into two groups of four.
