ZB Bibliotheek van Zeeland, the Zeeland Library (Zeeuwse Bibliotheek) in Middelburg, Netherlands, is the largest cultural institution of the province of Zeeland and fulfills the task of public library for Middelburg, scientific library for Zeeland (it is a WSF-library) and the academic library of University College Roosevelt. [2] It also has the function of Provincial Library Central for libraries, schools and institutions in the province.

History

The library was founded in 1985, when scientific, provisional, public, and specialized libraries were merged into one, creating the largest cultural institution in Zeeland and one of the Netherlands major libraries.

Books & services

The library employs 170 staff and lends about 632,000 publications annually. [3] It serves as a provincial service organization, advising institutions and other libraries, offering specialized services in all book-related areas.

Zeeland Library stages and develops cultural events, shows, and educational programs.

The Institute is named after three famous Americans, whose ancestors emigrated from Zeeland, the Netherlands, to the United States in the seventeenth century: President Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), President Franklin D. A Zeeuwse bolus or Zeeuwse bolussen is a sweet pastry of Jewish origin from the Dutch province of Zeeland. They are made by baking a white bread dough rolled in dark brown sugar in a spiral shape, lemon zest and cinnamon. The shape of a bolus differs between bakers. They are often eaten with coffee, and in some parts of the region the flatter underside is covered with butter.

University College Roosevelt (UCR), formerly known as Roosevelt Academy (RA), is a small, honors undergraduate liberal arts and science college located in Middelburg in the Netherlands and the sole university in Zeeland. It offers a residential setting, and is an international honors college of Utrecht University. It is named in honour of the Roosevelt family, which traces its ancestry to the province of Zeeland.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Middelburg Town Hall</span> 15th-century building in the Netherlands

Middelburg Town Hall is situated at the market of Middelburg, Zeeland. It is considered one of the finest Gothic buildings in the Netherlands. Construction began in 1452 and was supervised by several generations of the Flemish family of architects Keldermans. Construction was completed in 1520, the town hall received a facade with Gothic windows, red-white shutters, smaller turrets and twenty-five statues of Zeeland's counts and countesses. The building has one main tower, which the Middelburgers call 'Malle Betje'. This mocking name comes from the fact it used to run behind the town's other clock tower, the 'lange Jan'. A meat-auction or 'meathall' used to be situated in the building, which had a separate entrance. Whereas the town hall itself is still used for weddings, since 2004 its spaces are in use by the University College Roosevelt, the local university. The former meat hall has been in use as an exhibition space for the SBKM since 1980.
