Zhas Alash is a private opposition Kazakh language newspaper published in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Zhas Alash was established on 22 March 1921. [1] It is a nationalist[ citation needed ] newspaper named after Zhas Alash movement. The paper is published in Kazakh twice per week, Thursday and Tuesday. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Semey ), until 2007 known as Semipalatinsk and between 1917–1920 as Alash-Qala, is a city in eastern Kazakhstan, in the Kazakh part of Siberia. When Abai Region was created in 2022, Semey became its administrative centre. It lies along the Irtysh River near the border with Russia, 1,000 kilometers (620 mi) north of Almaty and 700 kilometers (430 mi) southeast of the Russian city of Omsk. Its population is 350,967.

The Constitution of Kazakhstan guarantees freedom of press, but privately owned and opposition media have been subject of censorship. In 2004 the International Federation of Journalists identified a "growing pattern" of intimidation of the media, and in 2012 several opposition media outlets were ordered to be shut down on charges of promoting "extremism".

The Alash National Freedom Party or simply Alash is an unregistered political party in Kazakhstan, stated as national-patriotic party. The Alash party was founded in April 1990, led by dissident and formerly imprisoned poet Aron Atabek. The party derives its name from Alash (1917–1920) which was a constitutional democratic party that was responsible in formation of the Alash Autonomy. Since 1991, the Alash party declared the freedom of enterprise, freedom of religion and equality of nations. The party was registered on 26 December 1992. After holding its congress, the Alash party was renamed to Alash National Party on 29 May 1999. The party was re-registered on 11 August 1999 and participated in the 1999 Kazakh legislative election, winning no seats.

Three alphabets are used to write Kazakh: the Cyrillic, Latin and Arabic scripts. The Cyrillic script is used in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. An October 2017 Presidential Decree in Kazakhstan ordered that the transition from Cyrillic to a Latin script be completed by 2031. The Arabic script is used in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, and parts of China.

The Alash Autonomy, also known as Alash Orda was an unrecognized Kazakh provisional government, or proto-state, located in Central Asia and was part of the Russian Republic, and then Soviet Russia. The Alash Autonomy was founded in 1917 by Kazakh elites, and disestablished after the Bolsheviks banned the ruling Alash party. The goal of the party was to obtain autonomy within Russia, and to form a national, democratic state. The political entity bordered Russian territories to the north and west, the Turkestan Autonomy to the south, and China to the east.

Kazakhstanskaya Pravda is a Kazakh newspaper that is government-backed. The paper was first published on 1 February 1920. The paper was started by the ministry of information and public accord. It is published in the Russian language.

Shakarim Qudaiberdiuly (Kazakh: Шәкәрім Құдайбердіұлы, who was born 23 July [O.S. 11 July] 1858 in Ken-Bulak, Semipalatinsk Oblast and died 2 October 1931 in the Chinghistau tract, Soviet Union, was a Kazakh poet, Hanafi Maturidi theologian philosopher, historian, translator and composer. He is known for being a disciple and nephew of Abai Qunanbaiuly.
