Zimswitch, operated by Zimswitch Technologies Private Limited, is a Zimbabwean third-party transaction-acquiring business launched in 1994. Zimswitch is affiliated with 19 commercial banks and two building societies which operate a network of 2900 point-of-sale terminals and 393 automated teller machines throughout Zimbabwe. [1] [2]

Background

ZimSwitch was formed in 1994 by a partnership of six financial institutions: Beverley, Barclays, CABS, Founders Building Society (ZBBs), Stanbic and Zimbank (ZB Bank). CBZ and Time Bank joined in 1995 and 1997 respectively. The late Wengesai Mhuriro was the first employee of ZimSwitch, as a messenger (Sept 1994).

Services

ZimSwitch offers Zimbabweans the ability to transfer up to US$10,000 with a flat transaction fee of $0.20 (plus $100 2-cent tax for every $10).[ further explanation needed ] It is an instant transfer, so money can be accessed faster. [3]

The Role of ZimSwitch

ZimSwitch is the sole national electronic funds switch for Zimbabwe. The company processes domestic card-based ATM and POS transactions between member financial institutions in real time online. ZimSwitch has recently enabled its member banks to process person-to-person payments through the switch using a variety of delivery channels, including mobile phones. ZimSwitch serves not only the financial institutions who are its members and users, but also provides an essential service to their customers, the Zimbabwean public. A debit card, also known as a check card or bank card, is a payment card that can be used in place of cash to make purchases. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) is a bureau of the United States Department of the Treasury that collects and analyzes information about financial transactions in order to combat domestic and international money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes.

An escrow is a contractual arrangement in which a third party receives and disburses money or property for the primary transacting parties, with the disbursement dependent on conditions agreed to by the transacting parties. ISO 9362 is an international standard for Business Identifier Codes (BIC), a unique identifier for business institutions, approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). BIC is also known as SWIFT-BIC, SWIFT ID, or SWIFT code, after the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), which is designated by ISO as the BIC registration authority. BIC was defined originally as Bank Identifier Code and is most often assigned to financial organizations; when it is assigned to non-financial organization, the code may also be known as Business Entity Identifier (BEI). These codes are used when transferring money between banks, particularly for international wire transfers, and also for the exchange of other messages between banks. The codes can sometimes be found on account statements.

A direct debit or direct withdrawal is a financial transaction in which one organisation withdraws funds from a payer's bank account. Formally, the organisation that calls for the funds instructs their bank to collect an amount directly from another's bank account designated by the payer and pay those funds into a bank account designated by the payee. Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) is an Australian government financial intelligence agency responsible for monitoring financial transactions to identify money laundering, organised crime, tax evasion, welfare fraud and terrorism financing. Payment and Settlement Systems are used for financial transactions in India. Covered by the Payment and Settlement Systems Act of 2007, legislated in December 2007, they are regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Board for Regulation and Supervision of Payment and Settlement Systems.

Mobile payments is a mode of payment using mobile phones. Instead of using methods like cash, cheque, and credit card, a customer can use a mobile phone to transfer money or to pay for goods and services. A customer can transfer money or pay for goods and services by sending an SMS, using a Java application over GPRS, a WAP service, over IVR or other mobile communication technologies. In India, this service is bank-led. Customers wishing to avail themselves of this service will have to register with banks which provide this service. Currently, this service is being offered by several major banks and is expected to grow further. Mobile Payment Forum of India (MPFI) is the umbrella organisation which is responsible for deploying mobile payments in India.

Peer-to-peer transactions are electronic money transfers made from one person to another through an intermediary, typically referred to as a P2P payment application. P2P payments can be sent and received via mobile device or any home computer with access to the Internet, offering a convenient alternative to traditional payment methods.
