Zug Izland is an American rock band from Detroit, Michigan, United States, currently signed to Psychopathic Records. The group sometimes refers to its fans as "zuggalos". [1]

Background

Zug Izland formed in 2001, named after an industrial site near Detroit. [2] The band was formed by Insane Clown Posse member Violent J (Joseph Bruce) and Mike Puwal, out of Bruce's love of rock music. Bruce wanted to know what a "Juggalo Rock" band would sound like. [3] Zug Izland's songs were written and developed during the recording of Insane Clown Posse's album The Wraith: Shangri-La . [4]

Bruce and Puwal completed the basic tracks for two songs, but still required a lead singer. Bruce wanted a singer similar to Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Jim Morrison or Axl Rose. [3] Although Syn was sought by three other bands at the time, he joined Zug Izland as their official singer. [3] The band broke onto the national competitive music scene in 2003 with their debut album, Cracked Tiles .

The album peaked at No. 48 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and at No. 31 on the Top Independent Albums chart. [5] Zug Izland released a follow-up album 3:33 the 1st of June 2004. It peaked at No. 26 on the Top Heatseekers chart and at No. 22 on the Top Independent Albums chart. [6] The release of the 3:33 album amicably fulfilled Psychopathic Records contract with Zug Izland. [7]

Zug Izland would depart from Psychopathic Records due to financial issues later that year. During this time, they started recording songs for a new album titled The Promised Land. Certain tracks like "Next To Me", "How Does It Feel?", and "Lies" were released officially online with leaked songs "Promised land" and "Woke Up Screaming" surfacing online some time later, along with "Chemical Girl".

In 2005, Zug Izland recorded a cover of Pink Floyd classic "Another Brick In The Wall". The track was a crowd favourite that Zug Izland would often cover at their live shows. Re-working the lyrics, the new track took a "Juggalo" theme replacing Pink Floyd's child chorus with a group of angry Juggalos screaming "Hey! People! Leave Juggalos alone!" in reference to the Juggalo culture's misrepresentation in mainstream media. The finished track was made available through the ZugIzland.com, but never made available on an official release.

Following years of touring and various line up changes, Zug Izland reunited, and returned to Psychopathic Records, announcing plans to reissue Cracked Tiles, record a new album, and tour with Insane Clown Posse in promotion of ICP's Mighty Death Pop! album. [8] [9] In the December 21, 2012 edition of Hatchet Herald, it was revealed that Zug Izland would release a "greatest hits" album, featuring three newly recorded songs recorded by Violent J and Mike Puwal. [10]

In August 2013 Zug Izland's greatest hits compilation Toxicology: Zug Izland's Dopest Bangers was released on Psychopathic Records, their first official release since 3:33 in 2004. The album featured a collection of tracks from their debut album Cracked Tiles, three remastered songs from 3:33 and three new recordings. The new songs reverted to the writing/recording process of Cracked Tiles with Violent J of Insane Clown Posse writing lyrics and Mike P writing the music.

In 2016, they finally released, via the independent record label So What I Think Is Kool Records,The Promised Land, as an album named The Promised Land / Nebula, an album which contained tracks from The Promised Land. These tracks would be remixed for the album. There were also remixes of previous tracks too. Syn would release a video in promotion of the album, [11] a music video for the song "Promised Land", and stated that the group planned to drop 4 of these kinds of albums. Two years later, they would release The Promised Land / Event Horizon. Event Horizon also contained remixes of past songs, new tracks, and a remix of "Promised Land" with Sewerside.

According to Faygoluvers.net, the line up is now Syn, Mike P, D-Lay & 2 Phat.

Music style

Allmusic reviewer Johnny Loftus describes Zug Izland's music style as incorporating elements of piano ballads, goth, industrial and electronic music, nu metal and horror film scores. [12] According to Loftus, "Zug Izland's sparer style [is] unique in an alt-metal climate of two-guitar lineups and monstrous six-string bass bottom ends." [12]

Riddle Box is the third studio album by the American hip hop duo Insane Clown Posse, released in 1995 on Battery Records and Island Records in association with Psychopathic Records. It is the third Joker's Card in the group's Dark Carnival mythology. It was released a second time by Battery Records and Jive Records. In 2008 it was re-released on a Riddle Box vinyl record. The album was the first Insane Clown Posse album in which the group worked with studio vocalist and guitarist Rich Murrell, who would work with the group throughout much of their career under the name Legz Diamond. It was released in four different versions, and earned a gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2008, Riddle Box was re-released on vinyl double LP format. The Wraith: Hell's Pit is the ninth studio album by American hip hop duo Insane Clown Posse. It was released on August 31, 2004 via Psychopathic Records as a follow-up to 2002 The Wraith: Shangri-La and second half of the sixth and final Joker Card in the first Deck of the Dark Carnival mythology. Recording sessions took place at the Lotus Pod in Detroit. Production was handled by ICP themselves.

Dark Lotus was an American hip hop group based in Detroit, Michigan, United States. Formed in 1998 as a side project of Insane Clown Posse and Twiztid, Dark Lotus was a representative of the horrorcore subgenre. From 1998 to 2017, Dark Lotus' lineup changed multiple times, with the most consistent members of the group being Violent J, Shaggy 2 Dope, Jamie Madrox, Monoxide and Blaze Ya Dead Homie.

Psychopathic Records is an American independent record label headquartered in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The label is most associated with the hip-hop music subgenres horrorcore and rap rock. The label was founded in 1991 by Alex Abbiss and hip hop group Insane Clown Posse. The iconography of a man with a meat cleaver has been used for years as a symbol of the group, its fanbase, and its associates.

The Calm is the eleventh extended play by American hip hop duo Insane Clown Posse. It was released on May 17, 2005 via Psychopathic Records. Recording sessions took place at the Lotus Pod in Detroit. Production was handled entirely by ICP themselves. It features the lone guest appearance from Esham. The EP peaked at number 32 on the Billboard 200, number five on the Top Rap Albums and topped the Independent Albums in the United States.

"Homies" is a song written by Insane Clown Posse, Mike Puwal and Twiztid for ICP's 2002 album The Wraith: Shangri-La. After the 1992 single "Psychopathic", "Homies" is the second single released by the group to not be produced by Mike E. Clark, who had stopped working with Psychopathic Records due to a disagreement with ICP's Joseph Bruce and Joseph Utsler. Clark later produced a remix of the song, which appeared on Forgotten Freshness Volume 4, after Clark reconciled with ICP.

Michael Velasquez, better known by his stage name DJ Clay, is an American record producer, rapper and disc jockey from Detroit, Michigan. He was signed to Psychopathic Records, but is now on his own label, Armed Robbery Entertainment. As of 2010, Velasquez has sold over 200,000 units.
