1,000 Days, 1,000 Songs

1,000 Days, 1,000 Songs (originally called 30 Days, 30 Songs, then 30 Days, 50 Songs) is a musical project launched on October 10, 2016, by Dave Eggers which was originally supposed to release one song per day from then until November 8, 2016, which is Election Day in the United States. Each of the songs is performed by one of 40 musicians or projects, and the songs all advocate against voting for Donald Trump in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. [1] [2] Eggers worked on the project with Jordan Kurland, the owner of Zeitgeist Artist Management. [3] [4] The two of them previously worked on two similar election-related projects, including the "90 Days, 90 Reasons" campaign in 2012. [5] Eggers originally got the idea for the project when attending a Trump rally in Sacramento, California in June 2016. [6] The first song in the project was "Million Dollar Loan" by Death Cab for Cutie.

Showtek is a Dutch electronic dance music duo consisting of two brothers from Eindhoven, Sjoerd and Wouter Janssen. Bhi Bhiman is an American singer-songwriter. After co-founding the rock band Hippie Grenade in 2002 in Santa Cruz, he later moved to San Francisco, where he released his debut solo album Cookbook in 2007. His second album, Bhiman, was released in January 2012 to positive reviews. It peaked at No. 28 on the Top Heatseekers chart and No. 15 on the Billboard Folk Albums chart. In 2012 Bhiman performed on Later... with Jools Holland, and he was subsequently asked to open Chris Cornell's 2013 North American tour. Bhiman participated in a tribute concert to Prince at Carnegie Hall in 2013, alongside artists such as Elvis Costello and D'Angelo. His cover EP Substitute Preacher was released in 2013, with renditions of late 1970s to early 1980s hard rock hits. His third solo album, Rhythm & Reason, was released in 2015 to positive reviews from publications such as American Songwriter, Irish Times, and The Guardian, with the latter opining that "he has a no-nonsense, gutsy vocal style and a batch of inventive songs" which "pair tuneful, sturdy, all-American melodies with often bleak and humorous lyrics."

D'Anthony William Carlos, better known by his stage name GoldLink, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. In 2014, he released his debut mixtape, The God Complex, which received critical acclaim. In June 2015, he was chosen as part of the XXL Freshman Class. In October 2015, GoldLink released his second mixtape, And After That, We Didn't Talk, which was supported by the singles, "Dance on Me" and "Spectrum". His debut album, At What Cost, was released on March 24, 2017 to positive reviews. The album's lead single, "Crew", peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and earned GoldLink his first Grammy nomination. His second studio album, Diaspora, was released on June 12, 2019.

Gnash (musician) American musician

Garrett Fredrick Charles Nash, formerly known by his stage name Gnash, is an American musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, DJ and record producer. He released his debut extended play (EP), U, in March 2015 on SoundCloud and followed up with the Me EP in December 2015. His third EP, titled Us, was released in March 2017 and includes the single, "I Hate U, I Love U", featuring Olivia O'Brien, which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one in Australia. His debut studio album We was released in January 2019, and also features "I Hate U, I Love U".

Cheat Codes (DJs) American electronic music DJ trio

Cheat Codes is an American electronic music DJ trio. Consisting of KEVI, Trevor Dahl, and Matthew Russell based in Los Angeles, the group is notable for their 2016 single "Sex", which samples the chorus from "Let's Talk About Sex" by Salt-N-Pepa, and their 2017 single "No Promises", which featured American popstar Demi Lovato and peaked within the top 40 of the US, UK and Australia. The track was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Wafia Al-Rikabi, known professionally as Wafia, is an Australian singer-songwriter of Iraqi-Syrian origin. Originally studying biomedicine at university, she began to write songs to escape its monotony. "Million Dollar Loan" is a song by American indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie. It was released on October 10, 2016 as the first song in the Dave Eggers-headed project 30 Days, 30 Songs. Like the other songs in the project, the song lyrically takes aim at Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president in the country's 2016 election. The project aimed to release one song every day from October 10 until Election Day, all of which are, according to its website, "written and recorded by musicians for a Trump-free America." It is the band's first new song since the 2015 album Kintsugi.

Multiple songs, albums, bands and performances have referenced Donald Trump or his various brands, including Trump Tower, his TV show, his hotel chain, and his casinos. While recent songs refer to Trump's campaign, election, and tenure as President of the United States, more than 200 songs refer to Trump prior to his campaigns for president. Most earlier references to Trump in lyrics revolve around his status as a business tycoon, but then shifted toward a stance more critical of his politics as he attempted to attain public office. With his victory in the 2016 presidential election, Trump's prominence in hip-hop music has been likened to that of Ronald Reagan's in hardcore punk during the 1980s.
