The 13th Empire Awards ceremony (officially known as the Sony Ericsson Empire Awards), presented by the British film magazine Empire, honored the best films of 2007 and took place on 9 March 2008 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, England. [1] During the ceremony, Empire presented Empire Awards in 12 categories as well as three honorary awards. The awards for the Sony Ericsson Soundtrack and the Done In 60 Seconds competition were first introduced this year. The Best Newcomer returned to a single award, having last year been split into "Best Male Newcomer" and "Best Female Newcomer" awards and the honorary Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema was renamed to Outstanding Contribution to British Film. The ceremony was televised in the United Kingdom by ITV2 on March 10. [1] [2] Welsh actor Rob Brydon hosted the show for the first time. [2] The awards were sponsored by Sony Ericsson for the fifth year, having last sponsored the 11th ceremony held in 2006. [1]

Atonement won the most awards with three including Best British Film. Other winners included Control with two awards and 28 Weeks Later , American Gangster , Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Hot Fuzz , Stardust and The Bourne Ultimatum with one. Ewan McGregor received the Empire Icon Award, Guillermo del Toro received the Empire Inspiration Award, and Shane Meadows received the Outstanding Contribution to British Film award. Nick Jesper from the United Kingdom won the Done In 60 Seconds Award for his 60-second film version of Titanic .

During the ceremony, Empire presented Empire Awards in 14 categories as well as five honorary awards. The awards for Best Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were first introduced this year. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Empire magazine two special honorary awards were presented, the Action Hero of our Lifetime and the Legend of our Lifetime awards. The Done In 60 Seconds Award is an award presented annually by the British film magazine Empire to the winner of that year's Done In 60 Seconds Competition, in which participants recreate a known film in 60-seconds. The Done In 60 Seconds Award was first introduced at the 13th Empire Awards in 2008, with Nick Jesper from the United Kingdom receiving the award for his 60-second version of Titanic. The competition was open for its first two years only to entries from the United Kingdom and has since become an international competition with each participating country selecting its own local winner which then joins the global shortlist of films, from which a panel of judges selects the global winner.

Along with the annual Empire Awards that were presented by Empire magazine for best in acting, directing and film there have been honorary awards which weren't always presented on a consistent annual basis. As of the 19th Empire Awards three honorary awards are currently handed out: Empire Hero Award, Empire Inspiration Award and Icon Award.

The Empire Icon Award is an honorary Empire Award presented by the British film magazine Empire. The Empire Icon Award was first introduced at the 11th Empire Awards ceremony in 2006 with Brian Cox receiving the award. The award was absent from the 12th, 17th and 18th Empire Awards ceremonies. Mark Hamill is the most recent winner in this category.

The Empire Inspiration Award is an honorary Empire Award presented by the British film magazine Empire. The Empire Inspiration Award was first introduced at the 2nd Empire Awards ceremony in 1997 with the Monty Python team receiving the award. The award was absent from the 3rd, 8th, 12th and 14th Empire Awards ceremonies. Luc Besson is the most recent winner in this category. At the most recent awards ceremony three honorary awards were presented: Empire Hero Award, Empire Inspiration Award and Empire Legend Award.

The Empire Award for Scene of the Year was an Empire Award presented annually by the British film magazine Empire to honor the best film scene of the previous year. The Empire Award for Scene of the Year was first introduced at the 8th Empire Awards ceremony in 2003 with "Yoda's duel" from Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones receiving the award and last presented at the 12th Empire Awards ceremony in 2007 with "The bridge attack" from Mission: Impossible III receiving the award. Winners were voted by the readers of Empire magazine.

The Empire Award for Best Soundtrack was an Empire Award presented annually by the British film magazine Empire to honor the best film soundtrack of the previous year. The Empire Award for Best Soundtrack was first introduced at the 13th Empire Awards ceremony in 2008 with the soundtrack from Control receiving the award and last presented at the 14th Empire Awards ceremony in 2009 with the soundtrack from Mamma Mia! receiving the award. The category was revived in 2016 when the Mad Max: Fury Road soundtrack received the award. The current winner of the award is the soundtrack from Baby Driver. Winners were voted by the readers of Empire magazine.
