The Isle of Wight is a county in the English Channel, two to five miles off the coast of Hampshire, from which the Solent separates it. It is the largest and second-most populous island in England. Referred to as 'The Island' by residents, the Isle of Wight has resorts that have been popular holiday destinations since Victorian times. It is known for its mild climate, coastal scenery, and verdant landscape of fields, downland, and chines. The island is historically part of Hampshire and is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
As a geographical entity distinct from the mainland, the Isle of Wight has always fought to have this identity recognised. The Isle of Wight is currently a ceremonial and Non-metropolitan county and as it has no district councils it is effectively a unitary county. The island is also the highest populated Westminster constituency in the country.
Isle of Wight is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Bob Seely, a Conservative.
The Island Games are biennial international multi-sports events organised by the International Island Games Association (IIGA). Competitor teams each represent different island communities which are IIGA members. Currently all competitor teams represent non-sovereign territories of European nations—some within European waters and some further overseas.
Isle of Wight County Council was the county council of the non-metropolitan English county of the Isle of Wight from 1890 to 1995.
Football has been a regular event since 1989 at the Island Games, the biennial multi-sports event for island nations, territories and dependencies. A 5-a-side competition for under-16s was held at the inaugural event on the Isle of Man, and the success this minor competition brought to the games meant senior men's football was included on the itinerary for the first time in the Faroe Islands, in 1989. Women's football was included on the games' schedule for the first time in 2001.
The 1993 Island Games on the Isle of Wight was the 3rd edition in which a men's football (soccer) tournament was played at the multi-games competition. It was contested by 8 teams.

The XIV Island Games was a major international multi-sport event held from 25 June to 1 July 2011, in the Isle of Wight, England. A total of 2,306 athletes from 24 islands competed in 15 sports and 190 events. The 2011 Island Games was the second Island Games to be hosted by the Isle of Wight. Previously, the Isle of Wight hosted the 1993 Island Games.
The XV Island Games were held in Bermuda from 13 to 19 July 2013. Bermuda was selected to host the Games by default after Prince Edward Island withdrew from the International Island Games Association.

The XVI Island Games was held in Jersey, Channel Islands, from 27 June to 3 July 2015. This was the second time that the island has hosted the games, the first being in 1997.
The XVII Island Games was held in Gotland, Sweden, from 24 June to 30 June 2017. This was the second time that the island has hosted the games, the first being in 1999.

The XVIII Island Games was held in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar between 6 and 12 July 2019. This was the second time that the territory has hosted the games, the first being in 1995.
The XIX Island Games were to have been held in Guernsey, Channel Islands in 2021 however due to the COVID-19 pandemic the games have been postponed. This occasion will be the third time that the island has hosted the games, the first being in 1987, the second in 2003.
Robert William Henry Seely is a British Conservative Party politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Isle of Wight since June 2017. He was re-elected at the general election in December 2019 with an increased vote and majority. Seely is a former journalist and soldier. From 1990 to 1995, he worked as a foreign correspondent in the USSR/post-Soviet states. From 2008 to 2017, he served in the British Armed Forces on the Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and ISIS campaigns.
