France has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 65 times since its debut at the first contest in 1956. France is one of only seven countries to be present at the first contest, and has been absent from only two contests in its history, missing the 1974 and 1982 contests. Along with Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, France is one of the "Big Five" countries that are automatically prequalified for the final, due to being the largest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). France has won the contest five times.
Corinne Hermès is a French singer. She represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest 1983 where she won with "Si la vie est cadeau", which brought the Grand Duchy its fifth and hitherto final victory.
Élodie Gossuin is a French beauty pageant titleholder, model, radio and television presenter, columnist and regional politician. She was elected Miss Picardy 2000, Miss France 2001, and Miss Europe 2001.
"Croire" is a song performed in French by Belgian singer Lara Fabian, written by Alain Garcia and composed by Jacques Cardona. The song is Luxembourg's entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1988, and became a hit in Europe selling nearly 500,000 copies.
France participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "L'amour à la française" written by Ivan Callot, Paul Léger and Laurent Honel. The song was performed by les Fatals Picards. The French broadcaster France Télévisions in collaboration with the television channels France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5 and RFO organised the national final Eurovision 2007 : et si on gagnait ? in order to select the French entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. Ten songs competed in the national final on 6 March 2007 where the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. In the first round, two entries were selected to advance to the second round following the combination of votes from a jury panel and a public vote. In the second round, "L'amour à la française" performed by les Fatals Picards was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from the jury and public vote.
For the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, held in Jerusalem, France entered "Je veux donner ma voix" to compete, performed by Nayah. Television channel France 2 was originally in charge of the French participation; however, it was later changed to France 3 due to the broadcast of the French Rugby League Championship which conflicted with the date for the final. France 3 opted to choose their entry via public selection, marking the first time since 1987 France held a national final to select their entry.
Switzerland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 with the song "Dans le jardin de mon âme" written and performed by Francine Jordi. The Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR idée suisse returned to the Eurovision Song Contest after a one-year absence following their relegation from 2001 as one of the bottom six countries in the 2000 contest. The Swiss entry for the 2002 contest in Tallinn, Estonia was selected through the national final Eurosong 2002, organised by SRG SSR idée suisse. Eight entries performed during the national final on 2 February 2002 where two rounds of public voting ultimately selected "Dans le jardin" performed by Francine Jordi as the winner. The song was later retitled as "Dans le jardin de mon âme".
France participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song "Et s'il fallait le faire" written by Fred Blondin and Anse Lazio. The song was performed by Patricia Kaas. The French broadcaster France Télévisions in collaboration with the television channel France 3 internally selected the French entry for the 2009 contest in Moscow, Russia. Patricia Kaas was officially announced by France 3 as the French entrant on 28 January 2009 and later the song was presented to the public as the contest entry on 1 February 2009.
Spain participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 with the song "Colgado de un sueño" written by José María Purón. The song was performed by Serafín Zubiri who represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 1992 with the song "Todo esto es la música" which placed fourteenth in the competition. The Spanish broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE) organised the national final Eurocanción 2000 in order to select the Spanish entry for the 2000 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Fifteen artists and songs competed in the televised show where 17 regional juries and a public televote selected "Colgado de un sueño" performed by Serafín Zubiri as the winner.
Denmark participated in and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 with the song "Fly on the Wings of Love" written by Jørgen Olsen. The song was performed by the Olsen Brothers. The Danish broadcaster DR organised the national final Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2000 in order to select the Danish entry for the 2000 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Ten songs competed in a televised show where "Smuk som et stjerneskud" performed by the Olsen Brothers was the winner as decided upon through two rounds of jury voting and public voting. The song was later translated from Danish to English for the Eurovision Song Contest and was titled "Fly on the Wings of Love".
Belgium participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 with the song "Envie de vivre" written by Silvio Pezzuto. The song was performed by Nathalie Sorce. The Belgian entry for the 2000 contest in Stockholm, Sweden was selected through the national final Finale Nationale Concours Eurovision de la Chanson 2000, organised by the Walloon broadcaster Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF). In the final on 18 February 2000 which featured ten competing entries, "Envie de vivre" performed by Nathalie Sorce was selected as the winner solely by public televoting, receiving 21,362 votes.
Iceland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with the song "Heaven" written by Sveinn Rúnar Sigurðsson and Magnús Þór Sigmundsson. The song was performed by Jónsi, who was internally selected by the Icelandic broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) in February 2004 to represent Iceland at the 2004 contest in Istanbul, Turkey. The Icelandic song, "Heaven", was presented to the public on 20 March 2004 during the television programme Laugardagskvöld með Gísla Marteini.

The French broadcaster France Télévisions in collaboration with the television channel France 3 internally selected the French entry for the 2003 contest in Riga, Latvia. "Monts et merveilles" was officially presented to the public by France 3 as the French entry on 7 March 2003 during the France 3 programme Le Fabuleux Destin de....
France was represented by Sofia Mestari, with the song "On aura le ciel", at the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 13 May in Stockholm. This was the second year in which broadcaster France 3 had been in charge of the French participation, and as in 1999 they opted to choose their entry via public selection, with a national final being organised on 15 February 2000. However the poor result obtained by Nayah in 1999 followed by the even worse result in 2000, together with the controversy surrounding the 2000 selection process, led to France 3 changing to internal selection in the years following, initially with much greater success.

The French broadcaster France Télévisions in collaboration with the television channel France 2 internally selected the French entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Tom Leeb was officially announced by France 2 as the French entrant on 14 January 2020 and later the song was presented to the public as the contest entry during a live performance by Leeb on 16 February 2020 during the France 2 programme 20H30 Le Dimanche.
