The 29th Metro Manila Film Festival was held in the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay, Philippines, from December 25, 2003 to January 8, 2004.

Maricel Soriano and Eric Quizon were chosen the Best Actress and Best Actor respectively in the 2003 Metro Manila Film Festival for playing the eldest child roles in two different films. Soriano plays the oldest of six children in Viva Films' Filipinas , while Quizon plays the eldest son who, in keeping with Chinese tradition, hires professional mourners to weep at his father's funeral, in Unitel Pictures' Crying Ladies . Hilda Koronel, cast as a 1970s bit player whose career is on the wane in Crying Ladies , was named the Best Supporting Actress, while Victor Neri won as the Best Supporting Actor for playing the activist-middle son in Filipinas. Mano Po is a 2002 Filipino drama film produced by Regal Entertainment, and an entry to the 2002 Metro Manila Film Festival. The film's title refers to the "honoring-gesture" used in Filipino culture as a sign of respect to elders. The film focuses on the lives of the Chinese Filipino community. Mano Po stars an all-star cast headed by Maricel Soriano, Richard Gomez, Kris Aquino and Ara Mina. Eddie Garcia and Boots Anson-Roa play the patriarch and matriarch of the Go clan respectively.

Mano Po is a Filipino drama anthology film series produced by Regal Entertainment, and is one of the most successful film series produced in the history of Philippine cinema, and the second longest-running Filipino film series, the first being Shake, Rattle & Roll which had a total of 16 films with three episodes each. The series has seven productions and also includes Ako Legal Wife and Bahay Kubo: A Pinoy Mano Po!. Mars Ravelo's Captain Barbell, or simply Captain Barbell, is a 2003 Filipino superhero film based on the Pinoy Komiks superhero of the same name. Directed by Mac C. Alejandre from a screenplay by RJ Nuevas, it stars Ramon 'Bong' Revilla Jr., Ogie Alcasid, Albert Martinez, Rufa Mae Quinto, and Regine Velasquez. Produced by Premiere Entertainment Productions, the film was released by Viva Films as part of the 29th Metro Manila Film Festival on December 25, 2003, and was the highest-grossing film among the festival's nine entries.
