All four incumbents were elected with famous pro-democrat radio host Albert Cheng won a new seat with Andrew To of The Frontier on a joint ticket.

Kowloon East is the eastern part of Kowloon, covering the Wong Tai Sin and Kwun Tong District, with Kowloon City District occasionally included.
Kowloon West is the western part of Kowloon, covering the Yau Tsim Mong and Sham Shui Po District, with Kowloon City District occasionally included.

The election was held on 9 September 2012 and all 5 seats in Kowloon East where consisted of Wong Tai Sin District and Kwun Tong District were contested. It was the first time the Pro-Beijing camp gained the majority of the Kowloon East seats. The Democratic Party, Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, Federation of Trade Unions and Civic Party each secured their party's incumbent seat. The new last seat was gained by the pro-Beijing independent candidate Paul Tse, defeating the two radical democrats Wong Yeung-tat and Andrew To and former LegCo member Mandy Tam with narrow margin.

Four of the five incumbents were returned to the legislature with radical democrat Wong Yuk-man lost to the newcomer Yau Wai-ching of radical localist group Youngspiration, who beat Wong by 424 votes. The extra seat was won by college lecturer Lau Siu-lai who advocated for "self-determination". All six winners were women.

The Szeto Wah-led Democratic Party won two seats, with Fred Li got elected, while Chan Yuen-han of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong was also elected.
The 2018 Hong Kong Legislative Council by-election was held on 11 March 2018 for four of the six vacancies in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo) - the Hong Kong Island, Kowloon West and New Territories East geographical constituencies and the Architectural, Surveying, Planning and Landscape functional constituency - resulting from the disqualification of six pro-democrat and localist Legislative Council members over the 2016 oath-taking controversy. The by-election for the two other seats was not held due to pending legal appeals by the two disqualified legislators.
