On June 10, 2010, at least 19 people were killed in the Mexican state of Chihuahua in shooting attacks due to an ongoing drug war. [1] The attack was on a drug rehabilitation clinic in the state capital Chihuahua. [2] Four other people were wounded. [3]

Shootings

At least 30 gunmen pulled up in six trucks and entered the second floor of the Templo Cristiano Fe y Vida (Christian Faith and Life Temple). [3] They told anyone who asked that they were from the police [4] before proceeding to fire at people they encountered, including staff and patients. [3] The victims were lined up and then executed by the gunmen. [4] The murdered patients were between the ages of 18 and 25. [4]

Perpetrators and motive

The perpetrators fled on foot. [3] They are unknown, but are thought to be members of a cartel in search of revenge. [2]

According to a Chihuahuan police spokesman, the attackers described those whom they attacked as "criminals" and left messages for them expressing this. [3]

Response

President of Mexico Felipe Calderón issued his condemnation from South Africa, where he was attending the Mexico national football team's opening game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. [4] He described such attacks as "outrageous acts that reinforce the need to fight with the full force of the law criminal groups carrying out such barbarism". [4]

The objective is to "besiege" Ciudad Juárez to concentrate forces and saturate the area to confront the three cartels already operating in the city. Ciudad Juárez is known to be one of the most dangerous cities in the Americas. In the year 2007 more than 100 police officers were killed in Juárez in attacks blamed on organized crime. As a result of drug cartel violence, President Felipe Calderón has previously launched other Joint Operations in other states.

The 2009 Guanajuato and Hidalgo shootings were several shootouts that occurred on August 6, 2009 in Mexico between police and gunmen resulting in the seizure by police of 1.2 million pesos, cocaine, assault rifles, police uniforms, bulletproof vests, handcuffs, hand grenades, and a variety of other military weapons.

The Ciudad Juárez rehab center attack was a shooting that occurred at 7:15 pm on September 2, 2009, at the El Aliviane drug treatment clinic in the city of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Seventeen men were killed in the attack, and another died the following day from injuries, bringing the total killed to eighteen.

La Línea is currently the leading faction of the Juárez Cartel originally designed to be one of the cartel's enforcer units set up by a number of former and active-duty policemen, heavily armed and extensively trained in urban warfare. Their corrupt "line" of policemen were set up to protect drug traffickers, but after forming an alliance with Barrio Azteca to fight off the forces of the Sinaloa Cartel in 2008, they established a foothold in Ciudad Juárez as the enforcement wing of the Juárez cartel. La Línea has also been involved in extortions and kidnappings. As of 2021, La Línea has formed an alliance with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in Ciudad Juárez to fight off influence and incursions from the Sinaloa Cartel.

Gente Nueva, also known as Los Chapos, in reference to their drug lord Joaquín Guzmán Loera, is a large group of well-trained and experienced gunmen that function as one of the elite armed wings of the Sinaloa Cartel, created to counter, battle and destroy the Juárez Cartel's influence in the Mexican north-west, as well as to battle and destroy La Línea which is currently the Juárez Cartel's largest remaining cell.

The Altamira prison brawl was a deadly fight that occurred on 4 January 2012 in Altamira, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Officials from the state of Tamaulipas confirmed that 31 people were killed, with another thirteen injured. The fight started after a drug gang burst into a section of the prison where they were banned from, attacking their rival gang housed there, triggering the fight. During the altercation, the inmates used several kinds of cold weapons (non-firearms) to kill their opponents. The prisoners also used sticks and knives to massacre the members of the rival gang.

On November 4, 2019, about 70 miles (110 km) south of the Mexico–United States border, gunmen opened fire on a three-car convoy en route to a wedding carrying residents of the isolated La Mora community, which is predominantly composed of American Mexican "independent Mormons." Nine people were killed with some burned alive in a car. A drug cartel is believed to be behind the attack.
