The 2007 Houston Astros season was the 46th season in team history. After finishing 1½ games behind for the National League Central to the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, the Astros elected to a select amount of subtractions and additions to compete. Jeff Bagwell retired after the Astros declined to pick up his $18 million club option for 2007, instead buying it out for $7 million. Pitchers Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens both filed for free agency on November 6 and re-joined the New York Yankees. To make up for losing those key players, they signed pitcher Woody Williams, and traded with the Colorado Rockies for Jason Jennings and Miguel Asencio. The largest offseason move the Astros made was signing outfielder Carlos Lee to a 6-year contract worth $100 million, the most in franchise history. On June 28, second baseman Craig Biggio achieved his 3,000th career hit. The club officially retired Bagwell's jersey number 5 on August 26. On September 30, Biggio played his last game as a major league player, having announced his retirement on July 24.

The 2003 Arizona Diamondbacks looked to improve on their 98–64 record from 2002. They looked to contend in what was once again a strong National League West. They finished the season with a record of 84–78, good enough for third place in the division.

The Colorado Rockies' 1998 season was the sixth for the Rockies. They tried to win the National League West. Don Baylor was their manager, although he was fired after the season. They played home games and hosted the 1998 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Coors Field. They finished with a record of 77-85, fourth in the division.

The Colorado Rockies' 2001 season was the ninth for the Rockies. They tried to win the National League West. Buddy Bell was their manager. They played home games at Coors Field. They finished with a record of 73–89, last in the NL West.

The 2002 New York Mets season was the 41st regular season for the Mets. They went 75–86 and finished fifth in the National League East. They were managed by Bobby Valentine. They played home games at Shea Stadium.

The 2009 Colorado Rockies entered the season attempting to improve on their 74–88 record from 2008. They lost 28 of their first 46 games, but following the hiring of interim manager Jim Tracy, the Rockies came back to win their third Wild Card title, and second in three years. The team drew 2,665,080 fans for the season, their highest total since 2002. The average home attendance was 32,902 fans. Their 92 regular season wins is currently the most in a single season in Rockies franchise history.

Walt Weiss returned for his second season as the Rockies' manager for the 2014 season.
