The team was coached by tenth year head coach Kyle Whittingham and played their home games in Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were members of the South Division of the Pac-12 Conference. They finished the season 9–4, 5–4 in Pac-12 play to finish in fifth place in the South Division. They were invited to the Las Vegas Bowl where they defeated Colorado State.

It was one of the 2013–14 bowl games that concluded the 2013 FBS football season. The game was sponsored by the Valero Energy Corporation and was officially known as the Valero Alamo Bowl. Oregon defeated Texas by a score of 30–7.

The 2014 Idaho State Bengals football team represented Idaho State University as a member of the Big Sky Conference during the 2014 NCAA Division I FCS football season. Led by fourth-year head coach Mike Kramer, the Bengals compiled an overall record of 8–4 with a mark of 6–2 in conference play, placing in a three-way tie for second in the Big Sky. Idaho State played their home games at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.

The game featured the South Division champion USC Trojans against the North Division co-champion Stanford Cardinal, a rematch of the 2015 championship and the first rematch in the game's history. USC defeated Stanford by a score of 31–28, becoming the first South Division member to win the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Led by 18th-year head coach Kyle Whittingham the Utes played their home games at Rice–Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The Utes finished the season 10–4, 7–2 in Pac-12 play to finish in a three-way tie for second place. Due to tiebreaking rules, Utah received the bid to the Pac 12 Championship Game. There they defeated No. 4-ranked USC for the second time on the season to win the conference championship. As a result, for the second consecutive year they received a bid to the Rose Bowl, where they lost to Penn State.
