Politics of North Macedonia Political system of North Macedonia

Politics in North Macedonia occur within the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister is the head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The Economist Intelligence Unit rated North Macedonia a "hybrid regime" in 2019.

The president of the Republic of North Macedonia is the head of state of North Macedonia.

Elections in North Macedonia

North Macedonia elects on national level a head of state - the president - and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by the people. The Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia (Sobranie) has 120-123 members, elected for a four-year term, by proportional representation. North Macedonia has a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments.

Bulgaria–North Macedonia relations Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and North Macedonia

Bulgaria–North Macedonia relations refers to the bilateral relations between the Republic of Bulgaria and North Macedonia. Both countries are members of the Council of Europe, and NATO. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union. North Macedonia has been attempting to join the EU since 2004, while the EU government officially gave its permission to enter accession talks in March 2020. Nevertheless North Macedonia and Bulgaria have complicated neighborly relations, thus the Bulgarian factor is known in Macedonian politics as "B-complex".

2014 Macedonian general election

General elections were held in the Republic of Macedonia in April 2014 to elect the President and members of parliament. The first round of the presidential elections were held on 13 April, with incumbent president Gjorge Ivanov finishing first with 53% of the vote. However, as he did not receive the support of 50% of all registered voters, a second round was held on 27 April, alongside parliamentary elections, with Ivanov and the ruling coalition led by VMRO-DPMNE claiming victory as Ivanov was elected president and the VMRO-DPMNE won 61 of the 123 seats in the Assembly.

Stevo Pendarovski is a Macedonian politician who has served as the president of North Macedonia since 12 May 2019.

14th Congress of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia

The 14th (Extraordinary) Congress of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia was held from 20 to 22 January 1990, in the Belgrade Sava Centar. The highest organ of both the government and the party, it was the last Congress of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia. It was attended by delegates from all the republics and provinces, as well as a party delegation from the Yugoslav People's Army. The meeting was chaired by President of the Presidency of the Central Committee Milan Pančevski from Macedonia.

Milan Pančevski was a Macedonian politician who was the final President of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia from 1989 to 1990, when the party was dissolved.

First Lady of North Macedonia is the title attributed to the wife of the president of North Macedonia. The country's current first lady is Elizabeta Pendarovska, wife of President Stevo Pendarovski, who has held the position since May 12, 2019. There has been no first gentleman of North Macedonia to date.

2019 North Macedonian presidential election

Presidential elections were held in North Macedonia on 21 April 2019. Three candidates were on the ballot in the first round; Stevo Pendarovski of the ruling Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova of the nationalist opposition VMRO-DPMNE party, and Blerim Reka, an independent representing the Albanian minority. The first round did not result in an absolute majority for any candidate, but Pendarovski won against Siljanovska-Davkova in the second round on 5 May.

Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova is a Macedonian university professor and lawyer. She was a candidate for the 2019 presidential elections of North Macedonia. She was defeated by Stevo Pendarovski.

Brdo-Brijuni Process Annual event

Brdo-Brijuni Process is an annual multilateral event in the Western Balkans. It was initiated in 2013 by President of Slovenia Borut Pahor and President of Croatia Ivo Josipović. First official meeting was in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia. Main focus of the Process is the enlargement of the EU with countries of the Western Balkans. Similar meetings were held at the prime-ministerial level in 2010 and 2011 by then-Prime Ministers of Slovenia and Croatia, Borut Pahor and Jadranka Kosor. Brdo-Brijuni process includes Slovenia and Croatia and candidates and potential candidates for EU membership from the Western Balkans.

The Aromanian National Day is the national day of the Aromanians, an ethnic group of the Balkans scattered in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania and Serbia. It is normally celebrated by Aromanians from various countries in which they are native and also by the Aromanian diaspora, but many Aromanians of Greece do not acknowledge it.
