On 9 July 2022, a mass shooting took place at a tavern in Orlando, Soweto, Gauteng, South Africa. 16 people were killed in the incident. [2] [3]

At about 21:00 GMT, a group of men armed with rifles and a 9mm pistol opened fire on patrons in the tavern. A total of 23 people were shot. 12 people were killed at the scene and 3 others later died in the hospital. [4] A fourth injured victim died at the hospital on 12 July, bringing the death toll to 16. [5] The perpetrators fled the scene in a white minibus taxi and have not been apprehended. [6] The police arrived at 04:00 GMT on 10 July 2022, and the injured victims were sent to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. [6]

The shooting occurred on the same day as another mass shooting in a tavern in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, though authorities do not believe the incidents are linked. [7]

Two men, Cheron Shelton and Robert Thomas, were charged in connection with the shooting, but charges against Thomas were later dropped and Shelton was acquitted at trial in 2020.

On 5 June 2022, a mass shooting and bomb attack occurred at a Catholic church in the city of Owo in Ondo State, Nigeria. At least 40 people were killed, with the highest estimates being around 80. Some in the federal government of Nigeria suspect the Islamic State – West Africa Province of carrying out the massacre.

On 26 June 2022, 21 people died during celebrations at the Enyobeni Tavern, a shebeen in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Four more people were injured. No official causes of death have been publicly released.

On 9 July 2022, a mass shooting occurred at the Samukelisiwe tavern at Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The shooting left four people dead and eight others injured.

On 6 October 2022, 34-year-old Panya Khamrab killed 36 people and injured 10 others by shooting, stabbing, and vehicle-ramming in Nong Bua Lamphu province, Thailand, before killing himself. The attack mainly occurred in a children's nursery located in the Uthai Sawan subdistrict of the Na Klang district. It is the deadliest mass murder by a single perpetrator in the modern history of Thailand, surpassing the death toll of the Nakhon Ratchasima shootings in 2020.
