The Yamuna is the second-largest tributary river of the Ganges by discharge and the longest tributary in India. Originating from the Yamunotri Glacier at a height of about 4,500 m (14,800 ft) on the southwestern slopes of Bandarpunch peaks of the Lower Himalaya in Uttarakhand,it travels 1,376 kilometres (855 mi) and has a drainage system of 366,223 square kilometres (141,399 sq mi),40.2% of the entire Ganges Basin. It merges with the Ganges at Triveni Sangam,Prayagraj,which is a site of the Kumbh Mela,a Hindu festival held every 12 years.
Shimla is the capital and the largest city of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. In 1864,Shimla was declared as the summer capital of British India. A cloudburst is an extreme amount of precipitation in a short period of time,sometimes accompanied by hail and thunder,which is capable of creating flood conditions. Cloudbursts can quickly dump large amounts of water,e.g. 25 mm of the precipitation corresponds to 25,000 metric tons per square kilometre. However,cloudbursts are infrequent as they occur only via orographic lift or occasionally when a warm air parcel mixes with cooler air,resulting in sudden condensation. At times,a large amount of runoff from higher elevations is mistakenly conflated with a cloudburst. The term "cloudburst" arose from the notion that clouds were akin to water balloons and could burst,resulting in rapid precipitation. Though this idea has since been disproven,the term remains in use.

It provides timber to larger industries. The older town is called Jagadhri. The Yamunanagar-Jagadhri railway station (YJUD) services the city. Despite its name,Jagadhri Railway is situated in Yamunanagar. There is also another railway station called Jagadhri Workshop in Yamunanagar.

Panchkula is a border city with Punjab,Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. The origin of the name Panchkula came from "the place where five irrigation canals meet". It is approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) southeast of Chandigarh,105 km (65 mi) southwest of Shimla,44 km (27 mi) from Ambala and 259 km (161 mi) northeast of New Delhi,the national capital. It is a part of the Chandigarh capital region or Greater Chandigarh. The Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula metropolitan region collectively forms a Chandigarh Tricity,with a combined population of over two million.

Himachal Pradesh,although railways and airways serve very limited transport needs,the road network of the state serves the transport needs of the people. Although,the geography of Himachal presents considerable challenge to the development of transport infrastructure,it has the highest road density among all the Hill States of India. Himachal also has 3 airports,2 narrow gauge rail tracks and couple of other under-construction broad gauge railway tracks,but roads remain the main mode of transport.

In June 2013,a mid-day cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides,becoming the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. The rainfall received that month was far greater than the rainfall the state usually received. Debris blocked the rivers,causing major overflow. The main day of the flood was 16 June 2013.
The Himalayan Expressway is a 27.5 km stretch of highway in India that runs through the Shivaliks at the trijunction of Haryana,Punjab,and Himachal Pradesh. It is part of the Chandigarh–Shimla Expressway which connects Zirakpur in Punjab to Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh. It forms part of National Highway 5. The stretch runs through 2 km in Zirakpur,Punjab,21 km in Panchkula,Haryana,and 4.5 km in Parwanoo,Himachal Pradesh. It was constructed by Jaypee Group.
National Highway 5 (NH5) is a primary national highway in India,running from West to East,connecting Firozpur in Punjab to the Sino-Indian border at Shipki La. The highway passes through Moga,Jagraon,Ludhiana,Mohali,Chandigarh,Panchkula,Kalka,Solan,Shimla,Theog,Narkanda,Kumarsain,Rampur Bushahr and continues along the Sutlej River till its terminus near the Tibet border.

The North Indian Ocean cyclone season has no official bounds,but cyclones tend to form between months of April and December,with the peak from May to November. The 1993 India floods was a deadly flood caused by several days long heavy monsoon rains and severe weather that occurred in July 1993 across eight states in the north of the country. Severe floods left 530 fatalities and millions people went homeless,including from Haryana. Punjab with 350 deaths was the most affected state where "1.2 million acres of crops" were extensively damaged,mostly from Patiala,north-western region of the state. Flash floods swept away major railway tracks,roads,and bridges,leading to disrupt the communications between the northeastern states and the rest of the country. Initial reports cited one hundred deaths in Gujarat.

From January to October 2022,excessive rainfall and widespread monsoon flooding occurred in the South Asian countries of Afghanistan,Bangladesh,India,Nepal,Pakistan,and Sri Lanka. It has become the region's deadliest floods since 2020,with over 3,700 people dead.
Floods and landslides on August 14 in the Indian Himalayan Region killed at least 72 people. Losses were estimated at $1.2 billion,and several hundred roads were closed. Portions of Himachal Pradesh received rainfall amounts of more than 12 inches (300 mm).
