Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in Madagascar on 29 May 2024 to elect the 151 members of the National Assembly. [1]

Electoral system

The 151 members of the National Assembly are elected via a parallel voting system: 87 seats are elected in single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting, while the remaining 64 seats are elected in 32 multi-member constituencies (of two seats each) by closed list proportional representation using the highest averages method.

The current Constitution of Madagascar was, according to the national electoral commission, endorsed by a majority of voters in the constitutional referendum held on 14 November 2010. The new constitution launched the Fourth Republic of Madagascar and was widely seen as an attempt to consolidate and legitimise the rule of Andry Rajoelina and his High Transitional Authority government which was installed after a military-backed coup d'état against President Marc Ravalomanana at the beginning of the ongoing national political crisis. The next Senedd election is due to be held on or before 7 May 2026 to elect 96 members to the Senedd. It will be the seventh devolved general election since the Senedd was established in 1999. It will also be the second election since the Senedd changed its name in May 2020, and the first following reforms to the voting system which increased the size of the Senedd from 60 members to 96 and shortened its term from five years to four.
