The Toreros were led by first-year head coach Bill Grier. They played their home games at Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, California as members of the West Coast Conference. The Toreros finished the season 22–14, 11–3 in WCC play to finish in 3rd place. They won the WCC tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as No. 13 seed in the West region. In the opening round, San Diego upset No. 4 seed Connecticut in overtime, but fell to No. 12 seed Western Kentucky in the round of 32.

The Toreros were led by head coach Sam Scholl in his fourth and final year. They played their home games at Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, California as members of the West Coast Conference (WCC). They finished the season 15–16, 7–9 in WCC play, to finish in seventh place. They defeated Pepperdine in the first round of the WCC tournament before losing to Portland in the second round.

1983–84 San Diego Toreros men's basketball team represented University of San Diego during the 1983–84 men's college basketball season. The Toreros were led by head coach Jim Brovelli and played their home games at USD Sports Center. After having just a .500 conference winning percentage after six conference games, the team won their final six WCAC games to secure the regular season conference title. San Diego received a bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the play-in round to Princeton. It was the first time in program history the Toreros won the WCAC title as well as their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The team was led by all-conference forward Mike Whitmarsh, who was a runner-up that year for the conference player of the year award. Brovelli was named the conference coach of the year.
