<span class="mw-page-title-main">José Ramón Machado Ventura</span> Cuban revolutionary and politician (1930-)

José Ramón Machado Ventura is a Cuban revolutionary and politician who was the First Vice President of the Council of State of Cuba from 2008 to 2013. With the election of Raúl Castro as President of Cuba on 24 February 2008, Machado was elected to succeed him as First Vice President, serving until 2013. He was elected Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in 2011.

Samuel Lewis Galindo was a Panamanian businessman, politician and author of essays and articles about the political, economic and social development of Panama. His published books include 900 Days: Collapse of a Dictatorship and The Strings of the Puppets: Internal Workings of a Political Campaign. In 1994, he was presidential candidate of the Republic of Panama for the Solidaridad Party, of which he was a founding member.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ramón Fonseca Mora</span> Panamanian novelist and lawyer (1952–2024)

Ramón Fonseca Mora was a Panamanian novelist, lawyer and co-founder of Mossack Fonseca, a former law firm based in Panama with more than 40 offices worldwide. He was minister-counselor of Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela, and president of the Panameñista Party until he was dismissed in March 2016, due to the Brazilian Operation Car Wash anti-corruption probe.

General elections were held in Panama on 5 May 2019. Due to constitutional term limits, incumbent President Juan Carlos Varela was ineligible for a second consecutive term. Businessman and politician Laurentino Cortizo of the centre-left Democratic Revolutionary Party won the election with around 33% of the vote, narrowly defeating Rómulo Roux of the centre-right Democratic Change, who won 31% of the vote. The PRD also won a majority in the National Assembly. The ruling Panameñista Party of President Juan Carlos Varela suffered its worst result in history. Its candidate, Panama City mayor José Isabel Blandón, received only 11% of the vote and came in fourth behind independent candidate Ricardo Lombana. The party also lost half its seats in the National Assembly.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Realizing Goals</span> Political party in Panama

Realizing Goals is a right-wing political party in Panama. It was recognized by the Electoral Tribunal of Panama on 24 March 2021. The party is led by the former president of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli. As of February 2023, the party had 234,634 members. It will become the ruling party once José Raúl Mulino becomes the president on 1 July 2024.

Cecilia María Pinzón Vergara, known as Chavelita Pinzón, was a Panamanian folklorist and singer, one of the most recognized figures in her country's folk scene. She was a teacher of folk dances at the Dance School of the National Institute of Culture, where she directed Panama's first folkloric ensemble. She took Panamanian dance troupes on domestic tours and to several cities abroad, including Washington D.C. and New York, New York.

A series of protests began in Panama on 20 October 2023 following the immediate passing of a 20-to-40-year mining contract between the government of Panama and First Quantum Minerals, the operator of Cobre Panamá, the largest open-pit copper mine in Central America, placed 20 minutes away from the western coast of Colon Province and within a protected area of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.

José Raúl Mulino Quintero is a Panamanian lawyer, diplomat and politician who is the President-elect of Panama. He ran for president in the 2024 Panamanian election, which he won with 34% of the vote as the Realizing Goals candidate and a substitute for former President Ricardo Martinelli.
