Xi Jinping's visit to France, Serbia and Hungary was a state visit of President and General Secretary Xi Jinping of China to France, Serbia and Hungary from May 5-10, 2024. [1] [2]

Background

In April 2024, Chinese Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission Wang Yi communicated with Emmanuel Bonne, the diplomatic advisor to the President of France by telephone on a trip for "adding new connotations to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries". [3] [4]

President Xi Jinping's trip aims to coincide with the United States bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade on May 7, 1999, and public opinion has focused on China's attitude and actions toward NATO as reflected in the event. [5]

On April 24, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in Beijing. [6] Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's chief of staff Gergely Gulyas told a press conference on April 25, 2024, that China's President Xi Jinping will visit Hungary on May 8-10. [7]

Visit

On the morning of May 5, President Xi Jinping left Beijing on a special plane for a state visit to the three countries. Accompanying Xi on the trip are: President Xi Jinping's wife Peng Liyuan; Cai Qi (member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and Director of the General Office of the Chinese Communist Party), Wang Yi (member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs), and others. Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy, officially the "General Secretary Xi Jinping's Thought on Diplomacy", is the current diplomatic and foreign policy doctrine of the People's Republic of China. The 20th Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), formally the Political Bureau of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, was elected at the 1st Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CCP on 23 October 2022 in the aftermath of the 20th National Congress. This electoral term was preceded by the 19th Politburo. Seven of the 24 members serve in the 20th Politburo Standing Committee.

On October 22, 2022, Hu Jintao, former General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, was escorted out of the hall at the closing ceremony of the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. He was pulled from his seat by two men following the incumbent General Secretary Xi Jinping's instructions. As media from across the world had entered the venue at the time of the incident, it quickly became the focus of international coverage.

The 2023 France–China summit was a three-day state visit by Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, to China from April 5 to 7, 2023. It was Macron's first visit to China since the COVID-19 pandemic and his third since taking office in 2017. He was accompanied by a delegation of more than 50 CEOs and met with members of the French business community in China. He also met with Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and President of China, and Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, to discuss various issues. By recalling the solid foundation of China-France relations and the friendship between the two peoples, the two heads of state had an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations, China-EU relations and major international and regional issues, especially the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and China's potential role as a mediator between Russia and the West. The visit was seen as an attempt to "reconnect" with China after three years of its zero-Covid policy and despite Beijing's increasing benevolence to Russia in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war.

China-Central Asia Summit is a diplomatic summit held by the leaders of the People's Republic of China and the five Central Asian countries. The first China-Central Asia Summit was held at the Xi'an International Conference Center in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province from May 18 to 19, 2023. Xi Jinping, the paramount leader of China, presided over the summit, and the heads of state of the five Central Asian countries attended the summit.
