On 22 July 2019, at least 18 people were killed after a car bomb exploded on the road of Aden Adde International Airport and near the Afrin Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia. [1] Dozens others were injured, 17 critically. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. [2] [3]

Attack

On 22 July 2019, a vehicle laden with explosives detonated at a checkpoint on the same road as the city's airport, killing 17 and injuring 28 others including some who were in critical condition. [4] Witnessed stated that the explosion knocked them off their feet and damaged many buildings.

Reaction

This attack and the attack two days later that killed the Mayor of Mogadishu and six others shocked and were strongly condemned by many countries. [5]

The Hargeisa–Bosaso bombings occurred on October 29, 2008, when six suicide bombers attacked in coordinated car bombings targets in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, and the Puntland port of Bosaso, both in northern Somalia. The bombings killed at least 30 people.

Battle of Mogadishu (2009)

The Battle of Mogadishu (2009) started in May with an Islamist offensive, when rebels from al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam attacked and captured government bases in the capital of Mogadishu. The fighting soon spread, causing hundreds of casualties, and continued on at various levels of intensity until October. The battle's name usually includes the year, when referenced, in order to distinguish it amongst the nine major Battles of Mogadishu during the decades long Somali Civil War.

The 2011 Mogadishu bombing occurred on 4 October 2011, when a suicide bomber drove a truck into the gate of the Transitional Federal Government's ministerial complex in Mogadishu, Somalia. The resulting explosion killed 100 people and injured over 110 others. Al-Shabaab, an Islamist group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack is reported to be the largest since Al-Shabaab launched an insurgency in Somalia in early 2007. It also follows the withdrawal of Al-Shabaab's forces from the area in August after an AMISOM intervention to bring aid to the country during a season of drought.

A suicide bomb attack took place on the Supreme Court of Afghanistan in Kabul on 11 June 2013. At least 16 people died and 40 others were injured.

The November Mogadishu car bombing occurred on 26 November 2016. At least 20 people were killed by the explosion of a car bomb near a market in the Somali capital Mogadishu. Medical sources told the AFP news agency that the death toll could be as high as 30.

February 2017 Mogadishu bombing killed at least 39 people, not claimed by anybody but Al Shabaab suspected

On 19 February 2017, at least 39 people were killed after a car bomb exploded near Wadajir market in Madina district, Mogadishu, Somalia. More than 50 others were wounded. No group claimed responsibility; Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those who planned the blast.

A suicide truck bombing occurred on 28 October 2017 in Mogadishu, Somalia. Later that day there were two more explosions, one from a suicide bomber's explosive belt. These bombings killed at least 25 people and injured 30.

On 4 February 2019, at least 11 people were killed and 10 others injured in a car bombing attack at a shopping mall in Mogadishu, Somalia. The car was parked near the mall at the time of the explosion. The attack happened in Hamar Weyne District, which was very busy at the time. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

1 July 2019 Kabul attack Terrorist attack in Kabul

On 1 July 2019, a combined gun and bomb attack took place in the Wazir Akbar Khan neighborhood of Kabul, Afghanistan. The attackers initially detonated a bomb-laden truck, after which five gunmen entered a nearby building under construction and fired on Afghan security personnel evacuating people onto the street. At least forty-five were killed, including the five attackers. The spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, Wahidullah Mayar, said that 116 civilians, including 26 children and 5 women, were wounded. The Taliban claimed the responsibility for the bomb attack in Kabul and said although civilians were not the Taliban target, some were injured.

7 August 2019 Kabul bombing Suicide car bomb attack in Kabul

A suicide car bomb exploded at a security checkpoint outside a police station in the Afghanistan capital, Kabul, on 7 August 2019. The explosion occurred in the early morning, in a predominantly Shia neighbourhood in western Kabul. At least 14 people were killed and 145 injured, mostly civilians. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, citing that one of their suicide bombers attacked "a recruitment centre". The attack occurred as ongoing negotiations between the Taliban and the United States were being conducted.

December 2019 Mogadishu bombing A suicide truck bomb attack in Mogadishu, Somalia

On 28 December 2019, a suicide truck bomber killed at least 85 people at the Ex-Control Afgoye police checkpoint in Mogadishu, Somalia. More than 140 others were wounded and, as of 31 December, 12 people remained missing. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on 30 December. The attack was the deadliest in Somalia since the 14 October 2017 Mogadishu bombings, which killed 587 people.

2020 Afgooye bombing Suicide car bombing

On January 18, 2020, a suicide car bombing killed four and injured at least 20 others in Afgooye, approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) from the Somali capital, Mogadishu. Most of the casualties were police officers protecting Turkish contractors building a road. The al-Qaeda-linked extremist group, al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.
