The 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing is part of Air Mobility Command stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. It was activated in 2008. It coordinates logistical air movements into, out of, and throughout the Pacific. It is part of the United States Air Force Expeditionary Center.

Mission

The 515th serves as the Pacific arm of the United States Air Force Expeditionary Center and Air Mobility Command (AMC). The wing's mission is to provide enroute capability to accelerate air mobility for war fighters throughout the Pacific, utilizing command and control, aerial port operations and aircraft maintenance. [1]

The 515th controls, loads, unloads, and repairs mobility aircraft en route through the Pacific area. This includes military, commercial, and foreign aircraft. Two Air Mobility Operations Groups fall under the wing. [2]

The group has overseen a humanitarian relief to earthquake victims in China and tsunami relief in American Samoa. The wing also plays an essential role supporting the United States global war on terrorism with air mobility support combat commands. [2]

History

The wing was first activated during World War II as the 15th Ferrying Group at Morrison Field, Florida in 1942. The 15th Group ferried aircraft between Florida and points in western Africa. From 1943, the unit then focused on the air transportation mission as the 15th Transport Group. Although the group was stationed at Morrison, its personnel were also used to man other stations of the Caribbean Wing of Air Transport Command (ATC). After a little more than a year of trying to use traditional Table of Organization units like the 15th, ATC found them too inflexible for its operations. It therefore decided to replace its groups and squadrons and assign personnel directly to each of its stations, based on the needs of the station. [3] Accordingly, in October 1943 the group was disbanded as ATC combined its units at Morrison into Station 11, Caribbean Wing, Air Transport Command. [4]

The 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing was activated in June 2008 in a major reorganization of AMC units in the Pacific, which aimed to improve efficiency of the six air mobility squadrons in the Pacific by placing them under the command of a single wing and two regional air mobility operations groups. Previously, the squadrons were managed by a single group. [5]

17th Airlift Squadron Military unit

The 17th Airlift Squadron was most recently one of four active duty Boeing C-17A Globemaster III units at Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina. The squadron was first activated during World War II as the 17th Air Corps Ferrying Squadron, redesignating as the 17th Transport Squadron a few months later. Until disbanding in 1943, it transported cargo and ferried aircraft in the Pacific.

730th Air Mobility Squadron Military unit

The 730th Air Mobility Squadron is a unit of the 515th Air Mobility Operations Group, based at Yokota AB, Japan and the 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing, based at Hickam AFB, Hawaii.

36th Airlift Squadron Military unit

The 36th Airlift Squadron is an airlift squadron of the United States Air Force. It is part of the 374th Operations Group at Yokota Air Base, Japan.

75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron Military unit

The 75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron is a provisional Air Force squadron. It was most recently activated in May 2014 in Djibouti, where it provides airlift support for Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa. It replaced the 52d Expeditionary Airlift Squadron.

30th Airlift Squadron Military unit

The 30th Airlift Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit, last assigned to the 19th Airlift Wing. It was the first active-duty associate unit attached to an Air National Guard wing, working with the 187th Airlift Squadron at Cheyenne Regional Airport, Wyoming. It operated the Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft of its co-located Guard unit, conducting airlift missions. The squadron was last active in this role from 2006 until about 1 September 2015.

7th Expeditionary Airborne Command and Control Squadron Military unit

The 7th Expeditionary Airborne Command and Control Squadron is part of the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. It operates the E-8 Joint STARS aircraft, conducting airborne command and control missions. The squadron has performed the airborne command and control mission since 1968, when it was activated in Vietnam. In 1985, the squadron was consolidated with three earlier units: The 7th Ferrying Squadron, which helped deliver aircraft to the Soviet Union from 1942 until 1944; the 7th Combat Cargo Squadron, which performed combat airlift missions in the Southwest Pacific Theater from 1944 until V-J Day, then became part of the Occupation Forces in Japan until inactivating in 1948; and the 7th Air Transport Squadron, Special, which provided airlift support for the United States' special weapons porograms from 1954 to 1966.

2d Combat Cargo Group Military unit

The 2d Combat Cargo Group is an inactive United States Army Air Forces unit. The unit was organized at Syracuse Army Air Base in New York. It operated during World War II in the Southwest Pacific, transporting passengers and cargo. Its last duty station under this designation was Yokota Air Base, Japan, where it was inactivated on 15 January 1946.

326th Bombardment Squadron Military unit

The 326th Bombardment Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last was assigned to the 4141st Strategic Wing, stationed at Glasgow Air Force Base, Montana. It was inactivated on 1 February 1963.

28th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron Military unit
