Advanced Chemical Industries, more commonly marketed and known as ACI (CSE: ACI, DSE: ACI), is a Bangladeshi pharmaceuticals and conglomerate company founded in 1973. The firm is headquartered in the thana of Tejgaon I/A, in Dhaka. ACI is one of the leading firms in the pharmaceuticals and chemical industry of Bangladesh.

History

In 1968, Imperial Chemical Industries, a British multinational company established a branch in then-East Pakistan. After Bangladesh gained independence in 1971, the company was incorporated on 24 January 1973 as ICI Bangladesh Manufacturers Limited and also as Public Limited Company. On 5 May 1992, ICI divested its investment in Bangladesh to the management when its name was changed to Advanced Chemical Industries (ACI) Limited. The company sold its insect control, air care, and toilet care brands to SC Johnson & Son in 2015. The company contributed taka 4,318 million to the national exchequer during FY 2019–2020 in the form of corporate tax, customs duty and value-added tax.

It was incorporated in 1987 as a real estate company under the name East West Property Development Ltd (EWPD). After its first project turned out to be successful, the company grew quickly. It presently owns more than 50 major concerns located throughout Bangladesh. The company's import-export turnover was $1.12 billion or BDT 111.38 billion in the 2022-23 fiscal year. In the 2018 fiscal year, the company's real estate holdings amounted to BDT 50,000 crores, or $4.6 billion.

Obaidul Karim is a Bangladeshi businessman and the founder and chairman of Orion Group. He is the president of sporting club Mohammedan SC Limited. He was indicted in many corruption charges and sentenced to 5 years, 13 years, and lifetime imprisonment on different corruption cases.

City Group is one of the largest Bangladeshi conglomerates. It began on 6 February 1972 as a mustard oil company venture under the name City Oil Mills. The first project of City Oil Mills turned out to be very successful. After then, the company grew very quickly. It presently owns more than 25 major concerns located throughout Bangladesh. Now, City Group stands as one of top ten business houses in Bangladesh.
