History

The airline was founded in 1980 as a freight charter company, it started operations with a Douglas DC-6 from the Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata. In the mid-1990's, APA International Air focused on regular passenger flights with leased aircraft from Faucett Perú. By the end of 2001, APA International Air got into financial difficulties following the September 11 attacks.

Air Santo Domingo is the flag carrier airline of the Dominican Republic. It operated scheduled domestic services and flights to Haiti and Puerto Rico. It wet-leased additional aircraft from Servicios Aéreos Profesionales, which it used for ad hoc, on demand charter services to the United States. Currently in 2020, the airline is in expansion plans and Servicios Aéreos Profesionales (Sapair) handles all operations for Air Santo Domingo.

The Dominicana DC-9 air disaster, also known as the Dominicana de Aviación Santo Domingo DC-9 air disaster, was an international flight that suffered a fatal accident on February 15, 1970. The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 crashed shortly after takeoff from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic en route to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The crash killed all 102 passengers and crew on board.

Las Américas International Airport is an international airport located in Punta Caucedo, near Santo Domingo and Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic. The airport is run by Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (AERODOM), a private corporation based in the Dominican Republic, under a 25-year concession to build, operate, and transfer (BOT) six of the country's airports. Las Américas usually receives a wide variety of long-, mid-, and short-haul aircraft. Santo Domingo's other airport, La Isabela, is much smaller and used by light aircraft only.

Air Century, S.A., or ACSA, is a Dominican Republic air charter operator that offers local and international services from the Santo Domingo La Isabela International Airport. The company was founded by Captain and Pilot Omar Chahin. Air Century commenced operations in Santo Domingo in March 1992.

The airline of the Dominican Republic has started flights from New York-JFK to Santiago de los Caballeros and Santo Domingo with two flights daily.
