Aarhus Tech (until 2011 Aarhus Tekniske Skole) is a technical school in Aarhus, which provides secondary education and vocational education. [1]

Contents

Aarhus Tech offers degrees in 34 disciplines in vocational studies, from masonry and welding to clothing design and cooking. The annual budget is DKK 410 mio. and the school employs 650 people. It is managed as a private institution. The school comprises buildings on three separate sites in Aarhus, but the main campus is located on Christiansbjerg in Business Park Skejby, Aarhus N.[ citation needed ]

History

The college was founded as "Prinds Frederik Ferdinands Tegne- og Søndagsskole" in 1828. Through a series of mergers, the school has since grown to become one of the largest technical colleges in Denmark, with 3800 students (2014).[ citation needed ] In 2002, the college merged with AMU Østjylland.[ citation needed ]

In 2014, Aarhus Gymnasium, Teknisk Gymnasium Christiansbjerg, and Teknisk Gymnasium Aarhus Midtby merged into Aarhus Tech. [2] [3] Prior to the merger, Teknisk Gymnasium Christiansbjerg (TGC) had offered a three-year technical exam program (HTX) since 1984.

Secondary education in Denmark usually takes two to four years and is attended by students between the ages of 15 and 19. Secondary education is not compulsory, but usually free of charge, and students have a wide range of programmes to choose from. Some education programmes are academically orientated, the most common being the Gymnasium. Others are more practically orientated, training students for jobs such as artisans or clerks through a combination of instruction in vocational schools and apprenticeship.

In Denmark, the Higher Technical Examination Programme is a 3-year vocationally oriented general upper secondary programme which builds on the 10th-11th form of the Folkeskole. It leads to the higher technical examination, the HTX-examination, which permits a student to qualify for admission to higher education, subject to the special entrance regulations that apply to the individual course. The programme gives special attention to scientific, technical and communicative subjects. HTX graduates may study at any Danish technical, scientific or traditional university as well as technical and technological academy (akademi) or college (professionshøjskole).
