Lydia Achieng Abura (died 20 October 2016) was a Kenyan singer who performed Afro-jazz, Afro-fusion, and gospel music.

Life

Achieng Abura was born in Eldoret and held an MSc. degree in Philosophy and Environmental studies. She had one child, a son named Prince.

She had a love for music, a great orator, and took music professionally, debuting with a gospel album called I Believe around 1990. Other albums that followed were, Way Over Yonder and Sulwe. In 2002, when she had shifted to Afro-jazz, she released the album Maisha. [1] Kenyan musician Abbi was formerly Abura's backing vocalist before he became a prominent solo artist. [2] Later Abura released the album Spirit Of a Warrior. In 2007, she released her last album titled Dhahabu yangu by the Blu Zebra label, owned by Tedd Josiah. [3]

Career

She was the voice of Crow from Tinga Tinga Tales . [4] She was a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador. [5] and toured abroad, for example in Spain. [2] As a member of the Divas of The Nile supergroup that featured four Kenyan female musicians Suzzana Owiyo, Mercy Myra, and Princess Jully that performed at the Festival Mundial in Tilburg, Netherlands in 2007. [6]

In 2008, she acted as a principal of the East African Project Fame (TPF). [7] and also campaigned for the Global Call to Action Against Poverty. [8]

Abura died on 20 October 2016 after a short illness at Kenyatta National Hospital. [9]

Awards

Abura won the Kora Award in 2004 for Best East African Female; the award was shared with Tsedenia Gebremarkos of Ethiopia. [10] She was nominated for the social responsibility category at the 2008 Kisima Music Awards. [11] She was among the Kenyan artistes sponsored by the Alliance Française in Nairobi. [12]

Legacy

Before she died, Abura had set up an online fund for her son, Prince, who had a heart condition and sickle-cell anaemia. In the week following her death the fund grew considerably and a son was offered an educational scholarship. [13] Prince Abura later passed on 10 May 2021 at the time he was a student at Riara University and was set to have graduated in September of the same year.

The Kisima Music Awards is an annual awards program that recognises musical talent in East Africa. Despite being Kenyan-based the scheme awards artists from a variety of countries, predominantly Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and incorporates a range of music genres.

Blu 3 was a Ugandan all-female band formed in April 2004 after winning the TV show Coca Cola Popstars. The name is contrived to mean 3 Beautiful Ladies from Uganda. Original members were Jackie Chandiru, Lilian Mbabazi and Cinderella Sanyu. After winning the contest, they went on to record the albums Hitaji (2004) and Burrn (2007). The Hitaji album spawned the hit singles "Hitaji", "Frisky" and the afro beat "Tomalaako". The girls launched Hitaji at lugogo cricket stadium in December 2004 with thousands of fans. The "Hitaji" video went on to win the Pearl of Africa Music Award for Video of the Year.

Tim Rimbui, better known as "Ennovator" is a Kenyan record producer, sound engineer and songwriter who has worked with many prominent Kenyan and East African artists. He is generally thought of as one of the leading music producers in Kenya. With the foresight of being creative, innovative and unique he chose the name Ennovator, which would best describe his sound and approach to music production.

Kleptomaniax is a rap group from Nairobi, Kenya. The group consists of three members: Roba, Collo and Nyashinski.

Absalom Nyinza, popularly Abbi, is an Afro-jazz and Afro-fusion musician from Kenya. He is backed by the Kikwetu band. He sings in several languages, including Swahili, English, French, his native Luhya and some other tribal languages.

Rosemary Wahu Kagwi, professionally known by her mononym Wahu, is a Kenyan singer-songwriter, former fashion model, actress, and entrepreneur.

East African Bashment Crew is a Kenyan-Ugandan reggae group formed by Bebe Cool from Uganda and his contemporaries. It consists of three members, Bebe Cool from Uganda, and the Kenyan duo Necessary Noize. All of them were already established musicians when the group was formed in 2005. While the members of the group concentrate on their main projects, East African Bashment Crew reunites every now and then.

Kevin Waire, best known by his stage name Wyre, is a Kenyan R&B and reggae musician. He is known for being a member of the groups Necessary Noize and East African Bashment Crew, as well as his solo career.
