"Ag Pleez Deddy" (also known as "The Ballad of the Southern Suburbs") is a South African song written and recorded by Jeremy Taylor, and released in 1962. [1] [2] It was written for the stage show Wait a Minim! , and has been described as the musical's "showpiece". [3] It provides a light-hearted insight into the lives of young white working-class South Africans, whose outlook has absorbed both English-language and Afrikaans influences, along with a fascination with consumer culture. On the surface a children's song, it became broadly popular.

The song was penned in "South African creole English", [3] the vernacular of young, English-speaking South Africans, with liberal sprinklings of Afrikaans words and phrases. The language was that of Taylor's students, to whom he taught Latin in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg. The lyrics are full of references to places, brands and entertainment popular among working-class white South Africans.

In the first four verses, a boy pesters his father to take him and his numerous friends to the drive-in theatre, the funfair, a wrestling match (between the Canadian Ski Hi Lee and the South African Willie Liebenberg), and finally to a distant beach in Durban, with a chorus chanting: "Popcorn, chewing gum, peanuts and bubblegum". The father remains silent until the abortive fifth verse, when he retorts " Voetsek!" ("Clear off!"). When the song resumes, the boy complains that, since his father won't take him out for amusements, he will have to entertain himself by beating up the boys (moer all the outjies) next door.

Reception

The single, described as "insightful", and a "fond classic", became a cause célèbre in South Africa, Rhodesia, Kenya, and Mozambique. [4] It sold more copies in South Africa than any single by Elvis Presley, as well as outselling any previous domestic single. [5] The success of the song led to the popularity and acceptability of political satire in South Africa during later decades. [3]

The song aroused significant controversy, with many Afrikaners unhappy about the mixing of Afrikaans and English in the lyrics, and its "far-from-flattering" representation of working-class whites, although some praised it for its "gutsiness".[ citation needed ] It was banned from airplay by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, who considered that it violated the principles of apartheid. As Taylor later commented, "The whole concept of separateness applied also to the concept of keeping English and Afrikaans apart, and they wanted the English to be pure English and the Afrikaans to be pure Afrikaans. Then Ag Pleez Deddy comes along, like a mongrel, a bloody street cur. They couldn't stand it." [6]

Post-apartheid, the song was described as "vulgar and base, revealing the raw side of South Africans in all their humour", [7] and "a liberating anthem for hitherto doomed anglophone youth". [3] Gillian Slovo wrote that the song is very familiar with white South Africans who grew up during the apartheid era, saying, "We loved the song's words, the demands of insatiable childhood for zoos and aquariums." [8]

In the longer term, another controversial element of the song proved to be its mention of "Nigger balls". These were a type of gobstopper, and were included in the list of consumer products coveted by the youths, alongside "liquorice, Pepsi-Cola, ginger beer and Canada Dry". Outside this context, the word "nigger" was not widely used in South Africa at the time, or considered unduly offensive; but it was growing increasingly controversial in the United States, and in subsequent years became effectively taboo in all Anglophone countries. When A New Book of South African Verse in English was published by Oxford University Press in 1979, edited by Guy Butler and Chris Main, the lyrics of "Ag Pleez Deddy" were included but the offending words were altered to "acid-drops", without Taylor's authority and to his great annoyance. [6] [9] However, Taylor himself, when later singing the song in the United States, substituted the term "sugar balls". [10]

Jeremy Taylor is a retired English folk singer and songwriter who has spent much of his life in South Africa, originally as a teacher of English at St. Martin's School, Rosettenville in southern Johannesburg. Since 1994, he has lived in Wales and France. After attending the University of Oxford, Taylor became a folk singer in South Africa, remembered for his single "Ag Pleez Deddy".

Kaffir, also spelled Cafri, is an exonym and an ethnic slur – the use of it in reference to black people being particularly common in South Africa. In Arabic, the word kāfir ("unbeliever") was originally applied to non Muslims before becoming predominantly focused on pagan zanj who were increasingly used as slaves. During the Age of Exploration in early modern Europe, variants of the Latin term cafer were adopted in reference to non-Muslim Bantu peoples even when they were monotheistic. It was eventually used, particularly in Afrikaans, for any black person during the Apartheid and Post-Apartheid eras, closely associated with South African racism, it became a pejorative by the mid-20th century and is now considered extremely offensive hate speech. Punishing continuing use of the term was one of the concerns of the Promotion of Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act enacted by the South African parliament in the year 2000 and it is now euphemistically addressed as the K-word in South African English.

Rooi gevaar is an Afrikaans phrase, sometimes translated into English as "Communist danger". The term gained popularity in South Africa during the Cold War and was associated with the perceived threat of international communism to religious, economic, and political freedom on the Southern African subcontinent. This pretext was used to justify the banning of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and its sister organisation, the African National Congress (ANC), which were regarded as leading anti-apartheid movements. Alternatively, the phrase rooi komplot was also used.

Wait a Minim! (1962–68) was a musical revue conceived by Leon Gluckman, with original songs by Jeremy Taylor, and a collection of international folk music arranged by Andrew Tracey. Many authentic instruments were played to accompany dances and pantomimes satirizing the national characteristics and political and social eccentricities of many different countries. The only spoken words were when the cast was introduced, and in the South African scene where apartheid was ridiculed.

There is a wide range of ways in which people have represented apartheid in popular culture. During (1948–1994) and following the apartheid era in South Africa, apartheid has been referenced in many books, films, and other forms of art and literature.

Boerehaat is an Afrikaans word that means "ethnic hatred of Boers" or Afrikaners as they became known after the Second Boer War. The related term Boerehater has been used to describe a person who hates, prejudices or criticises Boers or Afrikaners.

"Soweto Blues" is a protest song written by Hugh Masekela and performed by Miriam Makeba. The song is about the Soweto uprising that occurred in 1976, following the decision by the apartheid government of South Africa to make Afrikaans a medium of instruction at school. The uprising was forcefully put down by the police, leading to the death of between 176 and 700 people. The song was released in 1977 as part of Masekela's album You Told Your Mama Not to Worry. The song became a staple at Makeba's live concerts, and is considered a notable example of music in the movement against apartheid.

The apartheid regime in South Africa began in 1948 and lasted until 1994. It involved a system of institutionalized racial segregation and white supremacy, and placed all political power in the hands of a white minority. Opposition to apartheid manifested in a variety of ways, including boycotts, non-violent protests, and armed resistance. Music played a large role in the movement against apartheid within South Africa, as well as in international opposition to apartheid. The impacts of songs opposing apartheid included raising awareness, generating support for the movement against apartheid, building unity within this movement, and "presenting an alternative vision of culture in a future democratic South Africa."

Kaaps, also known as Afrikaaps, is a West Germanic African language that evolved in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Its status as a sister language of Afrikaans or a dialect of Afrikaans is unclear. Since the early 2020s there has been a significant increase in the number of works of literature published in Kaaps. Most works in Kaaps come from authors located in the Cape Flats area of Cape Town, South Africa where it is most commonly spoken. Although Kaaps is considered a growing phenomenon, it is more specifically a colloquial dialect of Afrikaans. All other distinct colloquial variations of Afrikaans, including Kaaps, are organically connected to Standard Afrikaans as a widely spoken unitary variety and interact with it.
