Agnimitra Paul is an Indian fashion designer turned politician who serves as the Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Asansol South and as the President of the West Bengal unit of BJP Mahila Morcha. [3] Prior to entering politics she was a Kolkata-based fashion designer.

Personal life

Agnimitra Paul was born into a family of doctors and academicians. Her father Dr. Ashok Roy is a paediatrician in Asansol. She completed her schooling from Loreto Convent and Asansol Girls' College She completed her bachelor's degree in Botany (Honours) in Banwarilal Bhalotia College.

She is married to Partho Paul, an entrepreneur. [4] They have two children.

Career in fashion

Paul as a fashion designer, designed clothes for several Bollywood films such as Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche and Via Darjeeling . [5]

She has designed costumes and personal wardrobes for Sridevi, Esha Deol, Mithun Chakraborthy, Shonal Rawat, Kay Kay Menon, Sonali Kulkarni, Vinay Pathak and Parvin Dabas. [6] [7]

She started her own fashion label "Inga" across many cities in India. Paul also designed for the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013.

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was presented with shawls and blankets that Paul designed. [7]

Political career

Paul joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2019.

In 2020, Paul became the BJP Mahila Morcha president of West Bengal succeeding Locket Chatterjee. [8]

As the BJP Mahila Morcha president, she organised self-defence training workshop called "Uma" for women across 23 districts in the state. [9]

She defeated TMC's Saayoni Ghosh in the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election from Asansol Dakshin Vidhan Sabha. [10]

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) is a registered unrecognized political party, that campaigns for the creation of a separate state Gorkhaland within India, out of districts in the north of West Bengal. The party was launched on 7 October 2007. The faction led by Binay Tamang, which was created out of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in 2017, merged into Gurung's GJM in 2021 after Tamang's resignation, following which he joined Trinamool Congress.

A Legislative Assembly election was held in 2016 for the 294 seats of the Vidhan Sabha in the state of West Bengal in India. The All India Trinamool Congress under Mamata Banerjee won 211 seats, and thus was reelected with an enhanced majority. Like in the 2011 election, the poll was held in six phases, with the first phase divided into two days. The first phase was held in Naxalite-Maoist affected Red corridor areas with two polling dates: 4 April and 11 April. The other phases were held on 17, 21, 25, 30 April and 5 May. The result of the election was declared on 19 May.
